Gents:
This is my first time posting on the pig section.
Here is a photo of the exit hole from my .600 NE on a running warthog in Zim this past July. It's not just high velocity super magnums that leave a huge hole with meat destruction. Look at the damage done here from a 900-grain Woodleigh at a muzzle velocity of 1900 fps! I doubt the bullet mushroomed much, if at all.

The pig was surprised and took off running and I took a quick snap shot with the left barrel. I tried to follow the pig's shoulder but my bullet hit far to the rear. (My Wilkes is an original from 1914). Yes, the shot is too far back and a quick walk up and another shot dispatched the hog quickly. Distance was probably 40 feet.

Not only is the exit wound larger that I would ever expect but note the hide split to the rear of teh hole. I have recoverd bullets on larger game that mushroom to 1 1/2" but don't know how much expansion happened here. Interesting?

Cal, good heavens, man. Just stuff him in a sausage casing and smoke. No grinding required!

Jan:
I've never had a problem with Woodleighs. Here are some examples from the last few buffalo and hippo. Solids lost 2-3 grains, softs 10-15 grains.

PS. Sorry, one moose, also.

Very nice Cal. I must've had a bad batch. I had 2 break up on Buffalo and two broke up shooting into a sand backstop. Actually Doctari shot the ones into the backstop. The others held up well. What powder and load did you use on them ?

Jan:
In my nitro cases from .450-400 and up I use IMR 4831 in all the cartridges. (I use IMR 3031 in the smaller cases). For the .600 I shoot 160 grains for softs and 155 grains for solids as my rifle was regulated for the 110-grain charge of cordite.

I know other powders will lessen recoil but 4831 is what I cut my teeth on and I have a bunch of it so I will use it up (but it will take many years). In addition to the two rifles mentioned, I also use it in my .450 no2 and .500.

In my bore rifles (4-8-10-12) I use only Blue Dot, with lead projectiles (ball and conical).
In my bpe rifles (450-500-577) I use only IMR 4198 with both lead and jacketed bullets.

I did a bit of shooting with powder coated bullets over the summer and showed no change in accuracy nor velocity so this fall (and early winter) I will be powder coating lead bullets in all that I shoot as the end to lead deposits in my bores is my goal. Then, an arm load of wood in the stove in the shooting shed and I shoot over a solid rest, out of a sliding window to my range of 50 yards, in 70 degree comfort (F not C!).

Goodness Cal:
Sounds like you're a tough old bastard to handle that much coal and a hunk of lead big
as a rock too.

I'm trying to get sorted out with 90-95 gr 7828 & 250's!

Hope your shoulder holds up to it.
How soft or hard of lead do you use?

George

George:
I was shooting Woodleigh bullets with smokeless powder. I do shoot wheelweights in the .600 and the weight is 900 grains. For hunting I use, as I do in all of my doubles, Woodleigh bullets. There are none finer.

I think my dental work may have come loose shooting that much weight. But, it does sound like fun. Must have been a bit of a spot on the grass, aye?
