jeffeossoprostaff vs monarch
Well, i reserve the right to get smarter -- and I did this week -- I have used many kinds of scopes for rifles in my life, and often I felt "well, this is good enough" .. though I have been using nikon glass for my preference for about 10 years -- i think you get better glass, dollar for dollar, than leupold -- buck master vs the leupold II line, prostaff vs the III line...
and this week I got a monarch scope ..
it aint THAT much more than a prostaff, how much better, really could it be?
Well, i'll likely have several prostaffs for sale over this coming year - pretty reasonable, actually, as they are good glass ...
but WOW, the edge clarity and crispness, and edge distortion (free, that is) is amazing

QuintusI too like Nikon glass for the money, and I love the Japanese Nikon scopes. That said the 2 new style Monarchs I bought when first introduced had inconsistent movement and would not hold zero over time. I still have 2 Monarch Gold scopes and a Monarch X tactical, but the rest I could not trust and have gone down the road. Just one persons observation.

Andre MertensThe 1st Nikon Monarch 5-20x40 I bought had the same zero holding problems as yours. I sent it back to Nikon and they replaced it (it took a few months...) with their new model 5-20x40 SF M NP.
Zero holding is ok now and it has served me wel so far. However, I can't say the optics are as sharp as my Swarovski or Leupold Vari X-III.
Rem 700 Police .308 Win + Nikon Monarch 5-20x40
Blaser R96 JagdMatch .222 Rem + Swarovski 6-24x50
AICS (Rem 700) .308 Win + Swarovski 5-30x50 P
Ruger MkIII VT + Lothar Walther Match bbl. .308 Win + Leupold Vari X - III 6,5-20x40

sambarman338I respect Nikon's glass and optics generally (as someone who doesn't buy a lot, I've owned this brand in a camera, two binos and one scope). However, I think they know more about making cameras and binos than scopes. The Monarch 4-16x42 I've got has great clarity but more tunnel vision than I've seen anywhere else.

I could not agree more. Plus, Nikon sport optic's customer service is beyond a joke, and Nikon Camera is so anti hunting I wouldn't consider buying anything Nikon anyway.

There is no reference to rifle scopes at either Nikon.USA or Nikon.com, not even a link. I think they are ashamed of hunters and shooters, but they certainly want our money.
I do not like Nikon for that reason. I work PT at a big-box outdoor store behind the gun counter, and I never, ever, offer a Nikon to a customer. I will if they ask to see one, of course, but I will not suggest one.

Pa.FrankI have a couple Pre-Monarch Nikon's and I like them a lot. One made the trip to Africa on my R700 30-06 and it performed admirably.
As I have gotten older though, what I appreciate most about the newer scopes, is the fast focus eye piece. It makes sharing with my grandson a whole lot easier!

Big Wonderful WyomingI just bought two Nikon Pro Staff 7's from LL Bean last night. They are supposed to be here next week.
One is going on a 700 in 7mm and the other one on a 308. We'll see how they go.
$350 for the 3-12, and $300 for the 3-10.
I might put the 3-10 on the 375.
