6.5 inches between rings -- what will fit?

Hi everyone,

I've got two big game rifles with an interesting situation. One rifle has a distance of 6.0 inches between the outer edges of the rings, and the other rifle has 6.5 inches between the outer edges of the rings. Since neither of these rifles are varmint guns, it's a real problem finding big game scopes with ocular bells greater than 6 inches apart. The Leupold VX-3 6.5-20x40 looks like it will fit, but I don't really like the available reticles, and is unsuitable for one of the rifles from a magnification perspective. I can, if necessary, go with a low powered scope on one of the rifles and use a scope with a straight forward ocular bell, but I'd really like a top end magnification of at least 7x; but I'll take what I can get.

Thanks for any suggestions.

This seems to cover ground crossed in another recent thread:

I don't know whether you can still get Redfield or other extension mounts and invert them, but that's what worked for me 30 years ago.

a_p,

Yes - Invert an extention ring to get the right scope to fit.

I had a Weatherby 378 with the same issue. I have a Leupold LPS 4.5x14x50 that is long enough to span distance between the rings. I've sold the rifle, so let me know if you're interested.

Whose bases to you have? You may not like weaver but they do make extension front bases for some rifles and some in steel Grand Slam.

The 6.5" rifle is a Sako TRG-S, so it's currently got the Sako bases, although I'm planning on moving to the Talley units very shortly.

The other rifle has a non-standard pattern. In the front, it appears that a Remington 700 (which is the same as the Wby MkV, I believe ) base fits very nicely, but the rear is a Browning BAR pattern, if you can believe that. The current mounts are plain-jane Weaver units, but I'm moving to Warne bases as soon as the BAR base arrives.

What are they chambered for ? That makes big difference in scope options.

Older Redfields, Kollmorgans, Weavers, Leupolds generally have longer tubes as the short action lunacy had yet to take hold.

A TRG will handle any number of Schmidt and Bender, Zeiss or IOR scopes with no extension rings required,
As both the 22 & 42 can be fitted with a SAKO Picatinny rail, I would imagine any scope could be fitted as the distance between the rings is 100% flexible.

I guess I'm missing something in the Ops question.

The top one has a Schmidt, I can't ID the lower's scope

Here's another with a Nightforce.

Well, the Leica ER 2,5-10x42 has 6 1/4" spacing and is one heck of a scope for the money!

Mine sits on my 375 Ruger and has 4" of eye relief, top quality class and Aqua Dura coating that make water drops just roll of the lences.

In my research, I have found the Leica 3.5-14x42 has over 7" of spacing. It appears to be the current spacing leader in a big game scope, if anyone else is experiencing the same issue.
