Just thought ya'll might enjoy this picture. It is a picture of a GIGANTIC Kudu bull that I found on the 777 Ranch's website a few years ago. I remember seeing a picture of him later in an issue of Texas Trophy Hunters, killed by some lucky hunter. If this Kudu isn't 60"+, then I don't know what is. He is HUGE!!! Most would kill to have a chance at a Kudu like this in Africa, much less here in the states. Usually African game just doesn't get as big in the U.S. but that's obviously not the case here. Anyways, thought some of you Kudu enthusiasts would enjoy the pic. Here it is:

I believe he was one of the 777 Ranch's breeders. I'm sure the guy that shot him paid a pretty penny. I would say he went for over 25k because their normal price for normal sized Kudu is 10-12k. Eeker

I can tell you the "3 curl kudu" picture was sent to me by a Namibian "PH" and was posted in the "Nickudu Files" about 2002.

Nickudu,

Are you saying this exact pic was sent to you by a PH in Namibia claiming this Kudu was in his concession?

Well, I can tell you right now that the "PH" was lying because I have seen video of this bull on the 777 Ranch (on Keith Warren's hunting show) and several years ago, there was a picture of him dead in the 777 Ranch's ad, killed by an African American gentleman and I believe he also had a 777 Ranch hat on. Maybe you need to steer clear of that "PH".

ES,

Isn't your PHC quote supposed to be "killed to have hunted"?

ES - Maybe you need to stop jumping to conclusions.

As I said, the picture was sent to me as a matter of mutual interest and I posted it. He also sent another photo of a 3 curl kudu mounted on his wall, also as a matter of mutual interest. Care to see it?

Nickudu,

I did not mean to start anything. The way you said it made it sound like the PH sent you a picture of the bull saying that it was a bull from his property. Maybe I misunderstood. In any case, your comment made me go back and look through my older issues of The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters. I thought my memory served me right. In the Volume 28, No. 3 May/June 2003 issue of the magazine, there is a full page color ad for the 777 Ranch on page 55. Almost in the center of the add is a picture of the above Kudu killed by an African American gentleman with mesquite and other South Texas brush in the background. Both the hunter and the guide are wearing 777 Ranch caps. When you see this picture, it is obvious that it's the same animal because there are only so many 3 curl Kudu in the world and the horn configuration is exactly the same as the above bull. I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew I wasnt' just trying to start trouble. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew that this particular Kudu bull was, in fact, from the Lone Star State. No harm intended.

I'm not sure why, but I almost jumped to the same conclusion as Eland Slayer. Maybe it was the quotation marks around "PH" that makes it look like that status is questionable and therefor he may have been posing or making illegitimate claims or something???? bewildered

No problem here ES. It really doesn't matter to me where the bull came from. Then, as now, the point of interest is kudu sporting "3 full curls". Checking my files, I find the guy actually sent 3 photos of, I assume, 3 different bulls.

The photo of the Kudu is staged.
You can easily tell that it is placed by the brush for the photo. If you look close you can see the back of the mount that is not very well hidden.

Photoshop would have helped this persons photo greatly!

I have to disagee with you on that one, I don't feel it's staged

Why shoot a kudu in Texas when you can go to Africa and have more fun? A drive-by shooting in Texas is not as much fun as chasing them all over the place in Namibia, RSA, Zim or wherever....

On a similar note...

I recently had a call from a New Zealand outfitting company wanting to know if I would like to shoot a 520" Red Stag. I said, sure if is free ranging and not a pet. He got quiet on the phone and said it was a breeder that he had used for years and it was time to cash out. It was in a small paddock of about 200 acres. The price was $100,000 USD. He said it will be the new No. 1 on SCI, (big deal!) and that some "rich American" will obviously want this animal. I agreed that someone would surely want such an animal, but not for me.

Obviously I passed on the deal, but he offered a 10% commission if I sent someone to him. I passed again. Shooting a "fish in barrel" is not hunting, it is collecting. Go to taxidermy auction and buy your trophies if that is what you are all about.

Oh well....

PS- Sorry for the storm those comments may cause..

I doubt it is staged as well. Nobody mounts a Kudu with one ear facing backwards and one out to the side ... and crooked as well.

It really makes no differenece as the post was meant to celebrate an exceptional specie. Not an exceptional hunt mind you, just an exceptional animal.

Take it for what it is worth, the appreciation of one spectacular animal, nothing more.

ES, thanks for posting the picture. He is a beautiful Kudu.

What an animal!

I wonder if Texas trophy management will do to the kudu what it did to the whitetail deer?

What size kudu is considered a big trophy in Texas? Do they reach the same size as RSA regularly?

Well, it may have been meant differently, but the way it was worded, and accentuated, I took it to be the same inferance, to the statement above, as did ES, and Canuck! Nickudu says "no" so I have to accept it as my mistake!

The 777 Ranch is in the deep brush country of Texas, with bush so tight, you can't see 20 feet, without a ladder, and only the tops of the bush from the top of a ladder, in most cases. All the shubbery in that picture is native to Texas, even if the Kudu isn't! I can tell you the picture is real, and was taken on the 777, as I have seen this picture several times in the Texas Trophy Hunter magazine, and in 777 adds, other places.

dogcat,

I both agree and disagree with you on a couple things. I agree with why shoot a Kudu in Texas? But not because it is "not hunting" because no matter where Kudu are, it is still hunting. I have been around Kudu on Texas ranches and they are still very difficult to find. The main reason I wouldn't pay to shoot one in Texas is price ($10-$12k). You can literally go on an entire 10 day safari and shoot like 5 animals (including Kudu) and pay for air fare and everything for the price of that one Kudu in Texas. Actually, we are planning on buying a ranch in the near future and we will probably have a few species of African Game. We will definitely have some Eland and also maybe some Kudu, Nyala, Kafue Lechwe, and Impala.

Nickudu,

That last picture you posted makes me think I'm looking at an overgrown Blackbuck or something, it has so many curls. Do you know what it measured? Must be over 65". Eeker

Boghossian,

Actually no, the Kudu in Texas generally don't get quite as big as they do in Africa, but some do as you can see. Most Kudu over 48" are considered "trophy" in Texas. The 777 Ranch has killed lots of trophy Kudu. One thing that is kind of neat to me is that in the most recent Safari Club record book for "North American Introduced Species", the No. 1 Kudu is only like 56" (shot by someone else on the 777 Ranch). This means that the guy that shot the above Kudu didn't even enter it in the record book. Which means, maybe he's not just one of the ego maniacs that most people say high fenced hunters are. He probably was out there hunting something else and saw this thing and just couldn't live without it (and probably had to refinance his house too).

Anyway, just for "kicks & giggles", I'm going to list all the African Animals I know of that you can hunt in Texas, along with their approx. average price. Here ya go:

Impala - $3,500
Blesbok - $3,000
Springbok - $3,500
Eland - $2,500
Gemsbok - $4,500
Kudu - $8,500
Waterbuck - $3,000
Nyala - $6,000

Red Lechwe - $3,500
Nile Lechwe - $7,500
Zebra - $3,000
Beisa Oryx - $4,000
Fringe Eared Oryx - $4,000
Scimitar Horned Oryx - $2,500
Arabian Oryx - $10,000
Bongo - $27,500
Sitatunga - $7,500
Dama Gazelle - $4,000
Grant's Gazelle - $3,500
Thompson's Gazelle - $3,500
Addax - $3,000
Aoudad - $1,500
Nubian Ibex - $7,500

I can tell one thing, you have never been to the 777 ranch, or the country around it! You can do a drive-by any place if that is the way you want to hunt, but shooting in that brush, and cactus, on foot is anything but a Drive-by !

I agree with you Dogcat, I'd much rather shoot a Kudu in Africa's Namibia, Zambia, or zinbabwe! But many places in RSA are more likely to be a drive-by than the brush country of Texas, even if it is in Africa.

I'm sorry for the storm your comments have caused, as well! Roll Eyes

Now, now let's be fair. Not ALL of those prices are OUTRAGEOUS, just the extreme majority of them. Some are actually good. Like the Eland. The only African animal I've ever killed is an Eland and it was in Texas. But, mine only cost $1,750 + 6 full days of hunting @ $150/day. That is close to what you'll pay in Africa BUT you get to keep ALL the meat. After cleaning it, trimming it, and deboning it, we got over 600 lbs. of meat. That's NO fat, NO grisle, NO bone. And I'm sure most of you already know that Eland meat is awesome.

Then I actually know of some places here in Texas where you can shoot a Sable for less than in RSA and there's no air fare involved. The Headwaters Ranch has Sable for $4,999. And Scimitar Horned Oryx, considering you can't really hunt them in Africa anymore, are a good deal and are supposed to taste very good as well. Then Aoudad are pretty much the same. Texas Aoudad hunts have to be one of the most challenging and cheapest true sheep hunts in the world. We have LOTS of them free ranging and behind high fence in Texas. They're VERY difficult to hunt anywhere unless you are at a feeder or something. But stalking them is tough. The ranch I worked on last summer had around 200 Aoudad in an 1800 acre section of the ranch and I only saw about 10 and that's the total from only 3 sightings in 2 months.

Hmmm, yep, tha's about right. A guy told me once, "You could loose an Aoudad on a golf course." They are very difficult to hunt if there is much cover.

Lot of fun though.

Widowmaker416,

I think MacD37 was exagerating a little. I'm a Texan and I hunted my Eland here. I'll do it again too. That's the main reason I really want a good herd on our ranch so that I can shoot one every year. We virturally replaced ground beef in our diet with ground Eland and it was GREAT! You haven't lived until you've eaten Eland Hamburger Helper. clap It really is good. By looking at the prices I posted, you can tell that some are just absolutely crazy. A BIG Kudu here will cost you $10,000 but we are only paying $600 per Kudu at Dirk's place in Namibia next year. Let's see: $10,000 vs. $600. Hmmmmm, decisions decisions??? bewildered??? You could actually shoot 15 Kudu bulls at Dirk's for less than one big one in Texas!

Great photo! Definately the biggest kudu I have ever seen.
It almost reminds me of the photo in THE LAST IVORY HUNTER were Wally Johnson was posed with a kudu with his hands covering the joint of one horn attached to another. It is a fake and is about the same length as the kudu above.

Widowmaker416,

Actually, it's almost all gone. I shot him back in November of 2003. We still have a few packs left. You should come to Texas and shoot an Eland Cow, they're only around $800-$1,000.

The place where I shot mine used to have too many on their place. It's 1,000 acres high fenced and at one point about 5-6 years ago they supposedly had 160 Eland on it. They have 6-1,000 lb. feeders that they were filling up 3 times a week. When I was there, they had about 125 on the place but they were really only in 2 main herds with some bachelor groups and lone bulls scattered around. Anyway, at one time they had an add in the Houston Chronicle for an "Eland Extravaganza". I wish I would have had my .300 back then and could have been a little older (I'm 18 now, but I was only like 12 when this was going on). They were offering "Trophy" bulls for $800, "Management" bulls for $400, and I believe they had cows for $250. I would have killed to go for those prices. Oh well. Since I shot my bull, the place is under new management and I hear they are not doing a very good job. They have, however, reduced the Eland population down to about 50 or so. It is the Camp Cooley Ranch. Here is their website: Camp Cooley Ranch. I became very good friends with the guy who guided my hunt, but he is now a Texas Parks & Wildlife biologist in Cuero, TX. The owner is from Germany and really has no concept of game management. Right now, they have yearling Eland bulls for $700 if anybody is interested.

You know Eland Slayer, I'm coming to Texas for a Whitetail hunt in December. I'm very interested in a cow for meat. I might extend my trip a bit! Thanks.
