Peter, this is in the Stormberg Mountains of the eastern Cape. They are very common there and naturally occuring. Global Sportsmen Outfitters, LLC Bob Cunningham 404-802-2500

Magnificant animal! Congratulations!
My attempt to describe 'typical eland habitat' starts, and ends, like this: "Not swampy!" Smithers introduces the subject by: " Eland are highly variable in their habitat selection....." But you are quite correct in that the high mountain area shown is NOT typical habitat for this fellow: A Livingstone subspecies of the eland [Taurotragus oryx livingstonii] - or at least a crossbreed, as evidenced by the vertical white lines on the body. The true 'Cape Eland' or Taurotragus oryx oryx, which lacks the vertical lines, do very well in such high mountain habitat. Whatever, a very good horn length and a good enough tufft of dark forehead hair to make it a good eland speciment in my book. In good hunting. Andrew McLaren.
