Actually, a 460 S&W Mag. would do for anything you cared to hunt as long as you could shoot it accurately. Most African countries won't let handguns in though (South Africa being an exception). Something like a 30/06 would also work on all plains game.

.375 H&H Magnum. It's good for everything large and small; plus it's a traditional African caliber. You won't regret it. Smiler

For plains game, any rifle caliber from the .270 on up would do. The 300's (including the WSM) are probably the best and most popular. A 7mm would do too, as would a .325 WSM, .338, a .375 etc. If plains game only for sure then my recommendations would be a .270, a .300, or .300 WSM, a 30-06, a 7mm, a .325WSM or a .338.

For plains game I'd recommend a 300WM or 338WM...you can't go wrong with either. You will need a larger bullet for Eland and Zebra. You just don't want to take a risk with anyting lighter b/c there's nothing worse than seeing your dream hunt run off into the bush.

As has already been said, anything from 6.5mm up will serve you well. Basicly whatever your favorite deer rifle - assuming it's above .264 - should be all you NEED for successful PG hunting in RSA. Actually your favorite DEER RIFLE is likely your best choice since you already shoot it well - again, assumedly. Wink

Now about that BFR... I'm familiar with the 45-70 version and it's suprisingly fun to shoot. It's so damned heavy that recoil is no more than a M29 in .44mag! I'd suggest a comfortable shoulder holster should you take it. Also as I understand it, only SCOPED handguns may be brought into the country by visiting hunters.

That said, your outfitter should be the best person to answer your questions.

T Carr posted an excellent thread on what to take. Sorry but I can't remember what forum it was on but I'm sure someone here can tell you. As for rifles, I generally take a .223 w/60 grain Nosler Partitions for small antelope and a .280 Remington for larger plains game. I have no problems with the 160 grain Nosler Accubond. Depending upon where you go, ranges on mature Kudu could be anywhere from 25-100 yards (Zimbabwe Lowveld) to 200-300 yards (South African bushveld). I would pick RSA if you want to see a lot of Kudu. The more game you see, the better your odd's to choosing a good bull. I would recommend what most will tell you: shoot a gun that your comfortable with, know its limitations and most of all, it should be accurate. Avoid "super explosive" bullets and stay with any of the newer flat shooting, controlled expansion bullets. You'll love Africa; nothing like it. Good hunting, David K.

Bringing your revolver is a great idea. Loaded with the right ammo and with correct shot placement it is perfectly capable of taking down most of SA's plains game. Here's proof:

In addition to that I would suggest bringing a rifle in .30 caliber (.30-06 and .300WM works well and so does a 7mm).

Other than that you pretty much have to bring some safari gear and yourself...

Handgun hunting is not my bag, but I can comment on rifles.

For medium to large sized PG, I think most would recommend nothing smaller than a magnum 7mm or a non-magnum .30.

A magnum .30 would be better, in my view, and a magnum .338 or .375 would be better still.

Most importantly, practice until you can hit with the rifle you choose, regardless of the diameter of the hole in its barrel. thumb

FYI: Should you decide to hunt RSA & take a revolver, I would highly recommend using a Hunters Support service (meet & greet/pre-approved gun import permit) such as Air2000. You'll need a minimum of 35 days in advance of your leaving (I suggest 45-60) to process your SAPS application. It is well worth the small fee to have your gun permit preapproved (saves time) and have someone take you 100% through the airport and on to your connecting flight if traveling further. If you run into problems, they will assist you. Great service, especially if it's your first visit. Jo'burg's airport is rather large. You can contact Anne at Hunters Support via email: air2000@global.co.za/ I do not work for them nor am I associated with HS. I use them myself and recommend them to all of our clients. They just make your trip easier. Good hunting, LDK
