Hello all
this probably sounds silly to some, but I live in the great white north and we don't seem to have permethren here, its been recommended that I treat my clothes with it before our trip to RSA this october, where do you guys buy it?
tractor supply, walmart, cabela's?
Do I really need to use it?
thanks
Dan

Dan, you want to risk Tick fever and any number of tick bourne diseases? Not only yes, but Hell yes...get it! The best is made by Coulston. Duranon Permanone. Try Cabela's. I have found nothing better by anyone else. All my clients get thorough insect instruction before they go anywhere in Africa. Ticks will be common in October. Average price: $5.99 per can. Take one can per week. Pack inside your boots in your check in luggage. LDK

Bob, I've never seen Walmart carry Coulston's??? Repel, yes. Ticks lick it up and get drunk but after the hangover they eat you alive Big Grin But then again, Texas does have exceptional service towards hunters!!!

Notlim,

I have never found it in Canada (except in really low concentrations in some insecticides, like imported Doktor Doom), but haven't looked exhaustively. My friend Don_G cut my search short by bringing me some up from the US.

You might want to check feed stores. The stuff Don_G brought me is for horses and kennels. Its concentrated and you dilute it before spraying your clothes directly or adding it to the rinse cycle of your laundry.

It worked great for Don_G and I in Tanz. Sprayed my clothing before hand, and took some with us to do a spray partway through the trip (and to douse the area around the beds, etc).

Never picked up a single tick that I am aware of, although I did see a few...the would drop off the clothing when they got on it.

We have lots of ticks around here in the springtime, so now I use it the same way for shed hunting and bear hunting.

Cheers,
Canuck

You should be able to get any of a dozen different brands from a local feed store. My daughter owns the Purina store east of town and that's where I get it. The price is sure right (free)! Wink

Recently ordered from this company and was very pleased. I bought the "soak kit". My son is just finishing 5 weeks in the Amazonian rainforest and I used the "soak kit" to treat his clothes. He said he never had a bug problem...seems to work great. Very easy to use, no after smell. Just soak the clothes in the chemical mixture for two hours and then hang to dry. Supposed to last for 6 weeks. Do it just before you leave and pack up your treated clothes.

I read somewhere else on this forum that Permethrin is classified as some sort of poison and cannot be imported (in your luggage) to Africa. Anyone know anything about this or have any experiences? The last thing I need is to give a customs clerk in Africa an excuse to destroy my luggage.

I buy mine in the Pharmacy section. Any spray (generic Rid) that is for lice will contain permethrin.

I know it worked wonders for me when I went to S. Texas a few years agao. Everyone had problems with ticks until they treated their clothes with the can I brought.

GLK: I carry Coulston's to Africa on every trip. No problems so far.

My fellow Hunters: a word of caution about pesticides: if you are allergic to certain chemicals (manmade or natural) you may find out too late, like during your safari. Absorbed in sufficient quantity, any pesticide that can kill insects can harm or kill YOU. That's why pesticide companies dilute their products. I used to use 100% Deet until I had a reaction to it. Whelps started coming up on my hands. Permanone products are designed to be applied to your exterior clothing only! Intelligent common sense tells you: Don't put it on your skin! Sweat can act as an emulsifier and your skin will absorb the chemical, which will store itself in your Liver. I'm not looking for an argument here, only passing along what I learned in Entomology years ago. If you have insect concerns, give me a call and I'll be glad to advise you on a regimen to avoid Ticks while on safari. Good hunting, David
