Well friends, I leave for safari #1 in 104 days . Bag is for this trip from little to big is: jackal, baboon, impala, blesbok, oryx & lion. If a 60" kudu steps out he's had it too I'm going to RSA in 2010 with my 2 adult sons & wife for 10 days. What should be my bag for safari number two? A couple of things to bear in mind: My wife wants a leopard. She does not want me to shoot a zebra because " they are too much like a horse". I'm working on that one , telling her that comparing a zebra to a horse is like comparing a coyote to a dog. Karamojo Bill At then end of my time here, I want to come skidding through the Pearly Gates & hear God say, "Whoa Boy, that was a hell of a ride!"

Very easy question Karamojo. Buffalo bull and tuskless ele cow for you and leopard for your wife. David

Those would be pretty spendy in RSA but could be done in the right area. What area in RSA will you be hunting? If it was me, I'd focus on some of the endemic species found in whatever region you'll be. Things like Black Wildebeest, Bontebok, Red Duiker, Nyala, and Vaal Rhebok all come to mind.

Oops, didn't get the RSA bit. Still, do the buff and leopard in one of those areas bordering Kruger... David

Look at the area you're hunting, but nyala, bushbuck, mountain reedbuck, vaal rheebok, black wildebeest, etc. all come to mind.

Easy answer, what every appeals to you that you can afford. The nice thing about hunting Africa is the variety. There is no predetermined list that you have to check off. DG, traditional plainsgame, spiral horns, little critters, whatever floats your boat. The main thing is to go and enjoy.

KBIll, My wife was the same way about zebra. I guess because we have had horses in the back yard for about 10 years and she came to love them. (even though she would not ride one) But after reading safari books and watching tv shows and seeing those beautiful rugs a zebra is on her list not mine. Good Luck on your hunt, JC

KB, If it's a family hunt in RSA, consider the common Springbok, Red Hartebeest, Bushbuck (always), Bush/Grey Duiker, Warthog and yes, Zebra. No trophy room would be complete without one. Like the Impala...they just say Africa! LDK You might want to put a package hunt together for your family if all are hunting. If your the only hunter, be sure to include a trip to Kruger or a wine/garden tour. If you're going to South Africa, you have to shoot a black wildebeest! While you're there, you should take a blue wildebeest as well. I agree that springbok should be on the list as well, don't forget there are four color variations (common, white, black & copper) so you could start working on a springbok super-slam. Then there's red hartebeest, eland, mountain reedbuck, vaal rhebuck, warthog, bushpig, nyala, lechwe, waterbuck and go ahead, shoot a zebra, then tell your wife. It's easier to get forgiveness than permission!

Bill, South Africa is a great destination for a fun filled safari. You should see lots of game, have plenty of shooting and lovely accommodations. I would caution you though that South Africa is very difficult if not the most difficult coutry to hunt leopard in. Even though I work with a couple of excellent operators in RSA I do not recommend them for leopard. In other areas like Zimbabwe and Zambia's Luangwa valley leopard are really not that difficult and with a little planning success should be 90% or better. Leopard doesn't have to be a single minded pursuit either. Zim can offer accommodations on par with RSA, great plains game hunitng and excellent leopard. If I can make some recommendations let me know. Mark MARK H. I put this up because I was a bit tired of the sniping at each other. I thought this might be more fun to think about for us. I'm thinking a cape buffalo but I know it's cheaper further North. DG interests me as I'm a bit of an adrenalin junkie. Eland & blue & black gnu interests me as does sable but sable are NOT cheap there. Mark, the consession is near Kruger and I hear that have quite a few & pretty good sized leopards. Shof, these sound intersting...nyala, lechwe as well as the springboks. I've also been thinking of hippo (on land). though there isn't much of a trophy other than the tusks and & a couple of shambok whips. All four will be hunting. I've told the "boys" I'll get ya there, you buy the animals. Throw some choices out for the wife, too! All she's ever taken is a blactail deer. Keep the ideas coming guys! Having just hunted that same area near Kruger a few months ago, my recommendation for your second safari is: 1.Nyala 2.Bushbuck 3.Kudu 4.Waterbuck 5.Zebra 6.Blue Wildebeast 7.Warthog Leave the dangerous game for another safari in a more isolated free roaming area. The area you are going to has excellent specimens of those listed above and is well suited for a group hunt. ALLEN W. Are you interested in the smaller antelope? I like the looks of klipspringer and mountain reedbuck, as well as the duikers and springbok (but I'd pass on the copper and the white springboks due to their cost). Andy

Well 2 things. First, I took my beautiful bride to a local SCI B-B-Q at a member's house that has a 4000+ sq ft trophy museum! He had 4 levels to accomidate a full bodied giraffe, white rhino, lions, a 70+ ele with the trunk outstreached, as well as over 600 heads & critters I've never seen or even heard about before!!!!! He is one of the few Roy Weatherby award winners ever. The Admiral,(as I call her) saw the beautiful zebra species in full body mounts as well as rugs. I think she will let me take the zebra now. Second thing. I heard that my PH just got MASHED by a cape bufflao that ambushed him. I heard that he had the skin ground off his forehead where the buff pushed him across the ground. He took a horn in the thigh "that you could put your fist through" and another that tore his hamstring loose so it was hanging...as well as one up the poop shute. DAMN I hope they have great surgeons ther to save the leg! Ok so I lied...3 things. I want a Lord Derby eland now! I know that they are not in RSA though. Guess I'll have to book a 3rd safari Karamojo Bill At then end of my time here, I want to come skidding through the Pearly Gates & hear God say, "Whoa Boy, that was a hell of a ride!"

Everyone has different tastes and priorities. The one thing I try to do is shoot animals that are endemic to the area. This is especially true if they have not been relocated elsewhere. although I have hunted them I see the vaious colour phases as chic hunting. Yes I like the animals as well but initially I think it is better to put the money into hunting different species. since you plan on RSA for your second trip as well I think the following are in order. 1 black wildebeest-anywhere 2 nyala-in zululand 3 red and blue duiker-zululand 4 cape hartebeest-most anywhere 5 vaal reedbuck any mountainous area 6 bontebuck-freestate or eastern cape, CITES req 7 blue wildebeest 8 always looking for the 60 inch kudu-limpopo 9 limpopo bushbuck 10 springbuck-anywhere 11 bushpig 12 warthog I can go on for a much longer list but I am sure your budget will run out before the list does. It certainly does in my house, and the list never seems to get smaller somehow. What I will say is plan for your main priorities. Once that plan is in place make sure you allow a few thousand extra for targets of opportunity that may pop up. A zebra is always in order. Burchells or Hartmans. RSA has a small population of mountain zebra that at times have a quota. Happiness is a warm gun

I might be the wrong guy to ask since I shot two buffalo on each of my first three safaris, but I'd say BUFFALO.

It's becoming clear to me that I will not go with a list other than what HAS to be dealt with in advance ie leopard tag. I will go to Africa enjoy time and sundowners with my "boys" and wife. I will take extra scratch and shoot what Ms. Africa hands me that is a good representitive of the species no matter if it is a cape buff or a diker. Seems to me the most luxurious safari wouldn't be one with supper served on fine china, but one in game-rich country without a list. Just get up in the morning and say "Let's hunt that direction", and see if you encounter anything that needs killin'. Would make a largely foot safari far more practical too, no multi-hour drives to get to where yellow unicorns usually hang out.
