I had many phone calls with Harry.

He sent me many photos of his safaris.

Doing some backups on my computer, I saw them and decided to share them with you.

I will post them here in the next day or two.

Awesome stuff!

That pic by the Isiolo sign is great - back in the day they had a log book you can to sign in and out of as you went through Isiolo to the NFD and back.

If you fellas go grab your copy of Horn of the Hunter, you'll see where Ruark got his inspiration for the spine art:

Saeed, I knew Harry, please note his name was Selby, Harry Selby... No doubt a simple error... He was a diminutive man of small stature and legendary achievements and longevity in the African hierarchy ...

All the photos are great, but the two of hirola (Hunter's hartebeest) are classic. That will never be duplicated.

Incredible photos!! Thank you for sharing, Saeed.
I have forwarded the whole post to Bradford O'Connor to see what his reaction might be? I know he hunted Kenya with his Dad and Mother, Jack and Eleanor O'Connor.
I see the floorplate of WDM BELL'S rifle, the famous ivory hunter, and author. I just gave a great friend a first edition of KARAMOJO SAFARIS, personally signed in pencil ("charcoal")by Bell, a Scottish tradition,on his 60th Birthday.
I also see the famous Rigby, 275 Rigby, given to Harry Selby by Robert Ruark, a regular client. I believe Selby’s daughter shot her first elephant with it, as a young teenager!! It is still in the family.
I think I also see Cotton Gordon fondling a rifle in one of the photos. He was a regular PH for K,D, and S... he regularly attended our SCI NW Chapter summer fundraisers at John and June Cotten's home, clients, and friends of the Kleinburger's who pioneered Africa hunting in Kenya, also active in our Chapter.
I didn't get the chance to hunt Kenya!! We were booked on our first safari with another old famous PH from Alaska, Bud Branham, in 72-73, and Kenya closed forever before we got to hunt!!
Truly, the Golden years!!

Saeed, thank you for sharing.

Wonderful looking at some nice older pictures.

The photos are the stuff that hunters dreams are made from.

Outstanding photos from a time gone by. I especially like the cloud shrouded, snow capped photo of Kilimanjaro, the leopard photos, especially the pair and the pregnant female, the rhinos, the Africans and the two photos of hirola. No hunter will ever take a hirola again.

I am sorry for the repeat photos.

They had different names, and all I did was convert them to post.

I also have some hunting stories he sent me.

I will post those too.

Anyone still alive who has legally shot a Hirola? I hunted there in 1975 and they were already protected then.

I was at a black tie affair in NYC a couple of years ago at a fancy old place that had some taxidermy including a shoulder mount of a hirola. No one could understand why I was excited about that, as opposed to the elephants, buffalo, etc. It was an old mount, but got my attention.

It may have escaped the eye, but all the Zebra pictured are of the Grevy species which suggests Selby spent most of his time hunting the NFD of Kenya, further substantiated by the occasional photo of a Hirola and Black Rhino.

The Hirola is also known as the Hunter's Hartebeest, named after H.C.V HUNTER a hunter and Zoologist who first wrote about them in 1888.

The project that Arjun posted looks like a great project for SCI and DSC FOUNDATIONS to take on. We should use that link and write personally to the President's of both, as members, and suggest support. I'm not sure of the safety in Somalia, but it would certainly help show how hunters dollars support wildlife of Africa, hunted or not!!... I hesitate to suggest USAID after recent discovery of sponsors receiving generous flows of funds back of last Administration!!

Great and unique photos Saeed!
One of the things I see is the shape and fit of all the PHs and Hunters clients.
A BIG contrast of the actual (both...) ones...

Thank you!
