I received this message from Jason Roussos yesterday. I don't think there was any doubt about whether tis one was a male of not Eeker

"I got back from a Damaro hunt with a client from Mexico. Got this unbelievable leopard. Huge, scarred up old male that was very dark (classic Ethiopian morph leopard). Probably the best cat I have shot to date. On the body he measured 8.5 feet. Skin off he measured just under 10 feet. Must have weighed close to 200lbs but didn’t have a scale. No skull measurement because unfortunately the clients backup shot hit the back of the skull. Because we could still get a skull width measurement my guess was that he was around 18 inches total score."

What a slob of a cat!! Rich, do many guys hunt leopard while in Ethiopia or do they just focus on the endemic species?

We have a quota of 2 per year in each of our two Bale Mountain concessions. Americans cannot import them. Ethiopia was in the midst of the Red Revolution when the ESA questionnaire went out in 1977 so no one was in a position to fill it out.
Pretty much the rest of the world can import them and with only 4 per year they don't go begging.

Rich,

Awesome Cat, I have been fascinated with the cats from your concessions, since I saw your hunt with Archie Nesbitt. I just wish we could import here,
to me this is what I consider Africa's greatest trophy. Big congrats to you and your client, he must be thrilled!

Best Regards,
Butch

Congratulations... I can't recall ever seeing a photo of a larger leopard!

Love the dark coat. I think it looks a lot like a jaguar as well.

How many color "morphs" of leopard does Ethiopia have?

How are they hunted in broad day light like that? Bait & blind, dogs/tracking or incidentally opportunistic taking?
Backup shot in the skull suggests an interesting story ...
