I am getting ready for a safari and I began to wonder if one should leave the scope attached to the rifle or take it off when packing in a gun case. I have a really durable SKB two gun case that is foam padded. So much so that the rifles are form fitted to the foam. I began to wonder if one might increase the chances of having the scope bases/mounts broken if left attached to the rifle in the case. I have done it both ways and have no issues either way. What do you guys think? Gracias, Hoot

You will be fine with the scope attached and I really wouldn't want to see you waste precious am having to re-zero in the field. Chances are, we both have the same SKB 2-gun case (the one with the center foam piece, I presume?) The foam doesn't allow much, if any, slippage in the case due to that tight fit. I don't remember seeing ANY movement of my guns, despite the obvious signs of rough handling on the exterior upon retrieval. If you want to relieve some of the stress in the case, remove the bolts from both rifles and tuck them in someplace safe along the bottom.

Never had any problems but then I use heavy grade aluminum cases; both strong and well padded. My clients use tuff paks to standard 2-4 gun cases made of strong plastics with no ill effects. You never know when dealing with the airlines but I'd think you'll be fine. Most damage to rifles in transit will be the stock breaking, typically in the wrist area of the stock. This is the weakest area of most rifles. The safe thing to do is remove the action from the stock. Pretty easy to do and will help lessen the chance of damage. ****************************************************************** R. Remove the bolt, but leave the scope on your rifle.

I've used the SKB with two rifles and ammo for three trips to RSA....no problems. Take the bolt out, its makes the TSA folks happy. Bob Bob DRSS DSC SCI NRA & ISRA

I detach the scopes on my rifles that are equipped with QD scope mounts. Depending on the rifle case I am using, I either pack the scopes in the same case or pack them separately. I also remove the bolts, but I always keep them in the same case as the rifles. I had a mounted scope go haywire on me once. I discovered that it was way off at sight-in, on arrival in Namibia. My rifle was spraying bullets, and my scope would not respond to adjustment. God knows how, but I am certain that it was damaged in transit, because it worked like a charm before departure. I have done it both ways. I would say do which one puts your mind at ease. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Countries like NZ require you by law to remove the bolt. I have never had a rifle go off zero when in a hard case despite traveling in rough roads, quad bikes etc. during hunts. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Hoot sounds like your quality case will work just fine. Just do not take scopes in carry ons. Mike

I use the SKB cases, take out the center divider, and put the guns in them IN THEIR SOFT CASES. You need soft cases anyway. Load up the remaining space with binocs, spare scope, batteries, duct tape, etc. till you approach 50 lbs. Add a chunk of waffle foam or two if it isn't tight enough to suit you. 4 trips over, some with 2 SKB cases, no problems at all. ______________________ RMEF Life Member SCI DRSS Chapuis 9,3/9,3 + 20/20 Simson 12/12/9,3 Zoli 7x57R/12 Kreighoff .470/.470 We band of 9,3ers! I've done it both ways. In the Tuffpak I pull the scopes mounted in Talley QD's and the scopes are put in a capped piece of PVC. When I went to Namibia I took 1 rifle with 2 scopes that way figuring the scope would be the most likely weak link. Most of my rifles go in a fitted case and I've never had one of those scopes need any adjustment. Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!
