I was thinking of going for one on my trip to South Africa this year. Are they about like hunting impala?

Yes, but they are tough little animals, and very wary.

I musta run into smart impala and dumb blesbok the times I've hunted them. I found the impala (particularly the rams) similar to whitetail; stay close to cover and back behind the females. I've had to do plenty of sneaking through cover and working to get an open shot. Most of the blesbok I've stalked were in the open and rather predictable where they'd be located. Yes, they were a bit spooky but all that meant was a 200 yard shot after glassing which one was best.

Sniper, if you want the Blesbok life cycle, click on my web site and then click on Blesbok. If you want hunting advice, Matt sums it up. Getting a good ram (16 inch or better) is the challenge. Find one 17" or better with 7 inch bases and he's a cinch to score gold. Find them on open plains, usually in small herds. Glass a lot and find the ram you want. Hunt them as you would Pronghorn Antelope. Good hunting, LDK

There are common blesbok, white blesbok, and their cousin, the bontebok. The bontebok is on the endangered list, and requires special permits to import; however, it is a beautiful trophy with essentially the shape of a blesbok but a deeper color particularly in the rear that nearly plum color.

All are found in the RSA and the common blesbok in Namibia. They are a wonderful trophy with commons generally running around 400 to 500 USD, whites a couple of hundred more and bonteboks around double the latter.

Often encountered in mountain country, they can require a flat shooting rifle (270 or 7RM) and a good stalk. The common has a very horse like face which is not the prettiest in the animal kingdom; however, the bontebok's coloring makes it a wonderful candidate for a full mount. Kudude

Sniper, my two blesbok were hunted in thick cover, were wary and were constantly on the run. They were not dumb in any way. Most of them that you see posted here under the other Blesbok post appear to have been hunted in wide open country which would make the shots much easier. So, it will depend on the terrain that you hunt. I would suppose that most blesbok hunting in South Africa will be in open country. Both of mine were very old rams approaching 17". By the way, here is the cousin to the blesbok as mentioned above. The bontebok requiresw a CITES permit if you decide to take one and one is available.
