Elephant Poachers Caught in Niassa

Last month I hunted in the Luwire Concession. While there the Luwire Scouts were hot on the heels of some poachers. Based on the kills in the surrounding areas they were looking for someone who was an experienced hunter using a 375. Elephants were found in tight groups, some within a few feet of each other, indicating someone who had been trained or has experience in shooting elephants.

The poaching has been very organized with Tanzania connections and fears of possible ties to Al Qaeda or ISIS. On September 23 they managed to catch the guy who may have been responsible for most of the recent kills. See the article below.

Newswise — Two known ivory poachers were arrested and five illegal firearms seized on Monday, September 22nd near Niassa National Reserve by a joint force including Niassa Reserve scouts from WCS and the Ministry of Tourism, supported by the new branch of the Mozambican police in charge of environmental crimes, and other scouts from the Luwire tourism concession.

Luwire operates two small planes and a helicopter in fighting the poaching problem in the Niassa reserve. They employ approximately 60 scouts, who recently went through training classes and exercises. Some concessions in and around Niassa employ no scouts or have minimal scouts used only for their area or to support their hunting clients.

I was very impressed by the efforts they have put forth to not only stop elephant poaching but the removal of snares and anti-poaching efforts for other species also.

Fantastic news !
If you look into Luwire anti-poaching facebook page you will understand the huge effort and money that concession is allocating to AP .
Without any shadow of a doubt , Luwire is by far the operator that spends more money in all Mozambique with Anti - poaching.
A true company , operated by great people , giving back to nature what nature has given them.
Big thanks to these guys , they are really the best in that country .
Please continue with this great effort.

Joyce and I are looking forward to hunting with Luwire and Derek Littleton in 2015. So glad to see the aggressive anti-poaching efforts.

Well Done!! tu2

However, it would have been better not caught but buried in an ant bear hole.
