I just found a video where a hunter shoots a buffalo "through" the brush with what looks like a brain shot. The guy then closes the opaque lens covers on his scope and approaches the downed buffalo!!! If you listen closely to the dialogue and look at the buffalo, you'll see that two more shots were put in the bull to "finish it off".

Interesting, huh? I imagine that it would have been quite the "Oh! Crap!" moment if (or when) that buffalo got up up.

The editing is also nice. Note how they talk about "the big guy", then show a cow???

Lens covers are useful, but Murphy's Law will insure that they are down when you need them up. I think I'd leave them in the tent when I was chasing DG.

Stupid Move!

I'm quite capable of doing stupid stuff, but I'll be dadgummed if, when I do, I want it put on television.

Bulldust baffles brains, number one, any mammal with it's brain destroyed does not shake it's feet in the air. Apart from a few twitches and spasms, it is all switches off. It must be noted that the "hunter" does say that the animal is anchored. Quite clearly depicted on the left shoulder is another wound.

Those kinda scope caps used on a scoped DG rifle will close and open when you don't want them to with brush hitting them, etc., worse case scenerio get you killed. I do like the Blaser rifle though.

Buck should've been using a Blaser .45/70. Big Grin

I've had lens covers on a couple of rifles, but never in Africa. I found (that enough to be irritating) I had a cap up when I wanted it down, or vice versa. I don't use them any more and live with the potentional damage to the lenes, 'cause I don't want to be "irritated" by a buffalo. Eeker

Well my solution to the scope caps, was to get the clear ones, I like having one on the end of my scope, and I never opened unless was wiping it off. You could see just fine through it, kept all the junk off my swarovski.

Scope caps are fine in snowy, rainy weather for all the things we hunt here I guess? But I can't understand why anyone would put a cheap, seethrough cap over a $1,500 scope lense? You pay good money for a quality optic then proceed to look through a crappy plastic cover in front of that high dollar lense. Kinda makes you wonder about paying the big bucks for your scope??

Our local CBS station used to air his shows at 10:30 p.m. Sunday nights. I watched the first show because I had never heard of him. After that, I tuned in to watch him make a fool of himself.

Did you see his Africa show where he hunted with Peter Capstick? Buck (while wearing his safari hat with zebra hat band) shoots an animal, I think it was an Nyala. Anyway, he turns around to Capstick and brags about the distance of the shot, which was clearly less than he stated. Capstick looks at him and says "in your dreams Buck".

My other favorite was when he shot the Russian Brown Bear off a cliff and then tries to sell what a whopper it was. I thought his Russian guides were going to start laughing. The shows haven't been on here for a couple of years now, but to this day anyone in our deer camp that does something stupid or shoots a dink is said to have pulled a "McNeely". Big Grin

If you have ever taken your gun to the range and shot with your clear scope covers on and then off you will probably notice a difference in point of impact. I know mine were off by at least 4 inches, not what I wanted or expected,. I will never use them again. Try it maybe it will be different for you but do you want to take that chance on the shot or trophy of a lifetime.

Just because they put it on tv don't make it real. I believe about half of what is on the outdoor and hunting channels. I always like it when they come up on and animal and talk about just anchoring it with one shot .. and it is stiff as a board and you can see it is a morning clip. Why is the anchoring shot in the side and not in spine if it was down with a brain shot. I am not opposed to another shot after one in the noggin. I do think a frontal brain for first is a low persentage shot. You know it takes very little to deflect in bush. But I would go to the rear and put one in the spine, not stand on it and shoot or shoot from a tree above as the other shots appeared to be in the side. Some like fiction... too bad they try to sell as real. Makes for good chat. animal

There are some good hunting films out there, but the Buck McNeely films are what is wrong with 80% of the so-called "HUNTING" films. They are little more than scripted BS and self-promoting junk. The McNeely films are on par with the toothless deer hunting films that are a dime a dozen, and are nothing more that infomercials for ten different pieces of junk like the Ronco pocket rod&reel, or the best pocket knife in the world that sells for $10.95 plus shipping.

The scripted walk up to a downed cape buffalo from behind, being very careful to check the eye before going out in front of the downed buffalo, while the camera is already in front of an animal filming the approach that everyone with half a brain knows has already been found to be dead as a door nail.

Most of these junk films are an insult to the intelligence of a real hunter.

There is nothing wrong with having sponsors, but the one minute of scripted hunt, and ten minutes of hawking some useless junk, and things like “HE WAS THE LEAD BULL, HUH?” I’d bet that PH couldn’t taste his food for a week after this guy left camp, from biting his tongue to avoid laughing when this guy opened his mouth to speak.

This is unfortunate because with a little know-how, his films could be worth watching. A little less “LOOK AT ME!” crap and phony set-up of scenes, and just show the hunting. Even Mark Sullivan’s films are better than this type with at least better hiding of his set-ups!

You would be suprized the types that show up on safari, and once in the bush, it is hard to get rid of a posser, haveing already fronted a lot of money on the safari with nothing but a deposit to recoup his investment. These guys don't get rich on these safaris, and to problems involved with ejecting a dim wit from your camp are not worth the piece of mind when he leaves. Once you've got him he is yours! The best part of this is you don't have an opening when he tries to re-book!

In my experience a PH will not discuss another client with a new client, but you should hear the PHs when they get in a party with other PHs. Sometimes you would luagh your butt off at some of the crap they see!

My comments went in a puff of smoke, too... Posted yesterday evening, gone this morning.

""The big bad bull", why do you show a cow??

Shot in the brain, and it kicks in the air???

Resting the barrel on the sticks, so the whiplash will send your shots all over the place????

Closing your scope covers before to walk on a shot buffalo?????

"The dominant bull in the herd", "He was the leader", when buffalo herds are led by COWS??????

"Finishing shots in the chest", what finishing if the first shot had really hit the brain???????

The mind boggles..."

Seems that some people are not open to criticism, are they?

MacD37, it is so easy to dump a tosser, posser or dick head. The daily rate already paid at the airport, forfeit, give him the option, hotel or airport and bye.Have your facts straight, communicate your thoughts to the toss and to relevant authority. No need to get your liver all soured up.Thank heavens for a very few jackasses in the hunting fraternity.

Scriptus:

I think that Mac's way of handling it is by far the best in this day of internet forums and the like.

Posted here have been some pretty damning accusations against P.H.'s that were almost impossible to defend, whether true or not.. and of course, some were true and some, not. No one seems to win in those cyberspace wars. The client may end up looking like a whining posser (and not have been) and the "if there's smoke, there's fire" attitude is adopted by lots of readers. Heck, some folks jump to such conclusions of "guilt" that Michael Jordan would need to get a stepladder to get more vertical. Big Grin

Why subject yourself to that if you can just turn the other cheek for a week, let the client think he's a real African expert and then snicker with your peers over a brew?

I'd suggest that the P.H. just grin and bear the posser and decide that he'll be fully booked next time.

We used to have a saying in the Marine Corps that "Discretion is the better part of valor". I've never seen a Marine who would not go up a hill if ordered to, but I've seen longer-lived Marines, with a little better leadership, flank that hill, still kick ass and get the mission accomplished avoiding the Purple Heart ceremony for lots of men.

Just my thoughts.

Still, I might find myself leaving Buck at the airport.

I can see that many of you gentlemen have never heard of closing your scope lens covers when approaching downed game.

The front lens cover is closed in order to prevent the beast's blood from splattering the objective lens following a close range finishing shot.

On the other hand, the rear lens cover is closed in order to prevent the hunter's blood from fouling the ocular lens when the beast claws or gores him because of his inability to see through the scope and his consequent poor shot placement.

So you see, the hunter and his prey may both be dead, but the scope's lenses stay clean! What a product!

Buck explained these techniques in great detail in one of his other fine videos.
