I am looking at the American CZ 550. Are these still plagued with the stocks cracking? Are the new versions all outfitted with the crossbars for support?

Generally speaking are they a good rifle?

I've had mine about 3 years, shot it a couple of hundred times with no sign of stock cracking. It has crossbolts and a laminate stock.

I had one with less than good experience. The barrel was bent from the factory. After that, the rings sheared off the gun.

I sent it back.

I have a C-Z 550 in .458 Lott built up buy Jim Brockman. It has his custom Express style laminate stock with cross bolts, scout style mounted scope plus other nice features. If you are interested let me know. I'd make you a good deal. I took it to Afica, great gun. PM me.

Nothing needs to be done to a factory CZ that doesn't need to be done to any factory product. Have a gunsmith who knows what they are doing check it out and then plan any mods.

Had two CZ's, .308W and .416 Rigby. Planning to get another.

I have one and like it. I had mine glass bedded to prevent stock cracking and thus far have had no problems after probably a bit more than 200 rounds through it.

I do believe the newer ones come with cross bolts.

I have a CZ American in .416 Rigby. I did not like the wood stock, way to thick and full. I ordered the Kevlar stock from CZ and like it very much, much better feel. Get the K stocked model and you won't have to glass bed it. Then send it to AHR and have the barreled shortened and the # 1 package.

In my opinion, like all factory rifles, it's a starting point. But the CZ, unlike some, is a superb starting point. Send her to AHR for finishing school, and she'll be ready for DGR high society!

I left my last CZ i Africa. If you want a bolt action then choose Winchester model 70.

I asked my gunsmith what was it about my CZ lott that made my hand on the grip hit me in the face and swell my nose upon recoil. He said that it was probably the stock that was too thick.I agree with him in that it was only the CZ that would do this and it does have a very thick grip.

I noticed that the stock of my mate's CZ550 .416 Rigby, newer than mine, is quite thick and chunky. It has the straight stock. Mine has the more European hog's back stock and the slight lip at the fore-end. It is slimmer. The metalwork on mine is absolutely stunning, and looks like a big game rifle should, now that Alex Beer has worked his magic on it. Now, I just need to attend to the stock...

Another issue about the CZ is the bolt throw.I think it is the bolt shroud that makes the bolt extend too far back when open and causes one to take his head off the stock while working the bolt and trying to get back on target.I think it is an inch further back than the Ruger bolt throw but it makes a whole lot of difference when working the bolt. One has to instinctively move their face out of the way so he doesn`t get hit in the eye by the bolt.

If you buy one pay attention to your bolt face. I built a .338 Lapua off a CZ550 and had to clean up the bolt face (phonographic finish) to get my cartridges to feed smoothly.

CZs are excellent guns every PH in Africa sims to have one ,experts like JACK LOTT and Jeff Cooper were fans of the action ,i have several used and abused at my farm were we hunt daliy and teach shooting classes ,COLD FORGED BARRELS AND NOT CASTING ON THEM so they are made in the old fashioned way ,very rare craking in stocks but you can make a good bedding work on them .
One of my rifles has thousands shells shots a continue working great i have it since 30 years ago .

I just bought one in 416 Rigby and it has great wood and the crossbolts. Will mount a low power scope on it and probably glass bed the action. I like mine. LDK

Three weeks ago I had the stock on my new CZ 550 American in 375 H&H crack after just six shots. CZ honored their warranty and the rifle is on its way back to me as I type this.

I have the safari classic CZ wood stock 416 Rigby. I'll admit that it's a beefy gun but it is one of the few rifles that can hold 4 Rigby cartridges in the magazine. I'm sure the 458 can hold 5 if not 6 cartridges in the mag. AHR is a good option if you want a slimmer stock. I have shot my over the counter 416 and an AHR 416 and the recoil isn't much greater with the smaller AHR frame. I haven't changed anything about my gun because it is already crossbolted and it's crazy accurate with open sights. Most problems with stock cracking occurs when these guns are shot off the bench in lead sleds. Something has to give when a 458 or even a 300 is shot and if its not ones shoulder, it's the wood. Unless your gun has a Kevlar stock, don't tie it down where the gun cant move.

When a rifle is shot off the bench or off hand, everything absorbs the recoil-your whole body, the ground, the ceiling, wall, the next bench,gravity,etc...The stock does not absorb all the recoil.

Earth to shootaway: A stock on a big bore rifle cracks behind the tang when the barreled action is not properly bedded. End of story, although proper bedding is another story entirely, and one of its own.

I converted mine to a 450 Dakota and bedded it. No issues, except it kicked like the neighbors mule!
