Dear Guests

Over the years there has been much discussion on this site whether the Giant Sable and the Western Zambian Sable may be linked !!

I recently rec'd a (very interesting) and comprehensive article which has been compiled by many (well respected xperts) in the wildlife fraternity.

I present it via the hyperlink below. It is a pdf file format of just under 1 meg size and makes very interesting reading IMHO

Western Zambian Sable

Cheers, Peter

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Thanks for sharing. I had hoped that there was some link between the two, but it's good to hear a definitive answer. The black face of the western Zambian sable is still a nice distinguishing trait.

WE were particularily interested ourselves as (some guests might know) we have a (private game fenced) hunting ranch bordering on the KNP and Bilili GMA in Southern Province, and we also have a (private game breeding ranch) near Kalomo which has a number of Sable specie we purchased from various areas around Zambia. I am not sure from which area's until I communicate with my brother Alan the ranch owner as I am living in New Zealand but travel periodically to the ranches in Africa.

Anyhow beow are a mix of pictures of Sable taken at the hunting ranch near KNP over the years, and also a picture of some breeding Sable at our 4000 acre "Bird Estate" property near Kalomo.

Cheers, Peter

Some nice bulls there, Peter!

Many of the sable from these outfits in the Kafue have the black faces associated with giant sable:
