As a outfitter from the eastern cape ,with my clients having to use the in house security company upstairs at the toilet office with black tiles, sounds horrible but thats where they are.
Please do not tip these individuals ,get there names rather and please let me know,THEY ARE NOT POLICE SO DONT BE WORRIED,JUST REPORT THEM .
They make threats of not putting your rifle on the plane ect,if they dont it costs the airways allot of money to deliver them the next day,the airways have been made aware of the situation and monitoring it.
LET ME KNOW OF ANY RELATED PROBLEMS Mad

Andrew, I assume you're talking about the guys who inspect your guns upon leaving JNB. I agree with you, don't tip! When on safari there in 2005 with my 2 brothers and dad, we inadvertently switched two of our four rifles from the cases they had arrived in, so the serial numbers didn't match on one of the rifles in the case. One of the inspectors noticed this, and pointed it out to me, and implied that this would be a big problem (hinting that a tip would fix the problem). I told him, "Well, my two brothers' case just went through this office 15 minutes ago and you apparently didn't notice that one of the rifles was not the one listed on the customs form, so I guess that was YOUR mistake." They decided to let the rifle case go on the plane, I didn't give them a tip, and it arrived just fine at my U.S. destination. Maybe I was playing with fire, but at that time the JNB airport was FULL of young boys and grown men begging for tips for doing basically nothing, and I was getting tired of it. It's nice to see they've cleaned the place up and chased them all out.

It's not tipping, in fact they now say buy me a soda...The guy who wheeled my gun case in the Joberg airport from baggage to the police on arrival said he would appreciate if I bought him a soda out of sight of my PH...When leaving Joberg the guy who intercepted me at the check in counter also asked me to buy him a soda I gave him 20 rand he said no 200..it was not fun. This happened this weekend

In 2004, while the agent was checking my serial numbers, etc. there was a guy who came up to me out of the blue and kept saying something to me, but honestly, I couldn't understand a single word he was saying. I kept having him repeat what he was saying .. and still didn't understand a single word.

After he left, the lady checking my guns looked up and said, "He was wanting you to buy him a soda because he was dying of thirst."

I replied, "Oh, I was wondering why he kept rubbing his throat."

I guess the guy found soemone else to bother because I never saw him again.

It starts in the baggage area where you await to pre-register your guns. The uniformed officer will hit you up and he wants $20 at the minimum. He will call you up to the desk one at a time and in a very low voice ask you "What do you have for me?" Your best answer is to give him a note with the Police Chief's name and office number. Your next "request" will be in the SAPS office. Any small ommission or mistake will open the door for extortion. Simply explain: "I gave the guy downstairs $400R and he said he would split it with you guys." It continues to be a serious problem for the DIY hunters. It's worth hiring a "meet and greet" agency. They keep the flies away.

I was wondering about this because my last time thru in October of last year there was no one around to sign for guns. After looking around for awhile we finally just went to the SAPS office after going thru customs and our guns were there.

Same for us last June. We waited around looking for the gun cases to come in, then we checked at the SAPS office and the guns were already there.

Nobody solicited any tips anywhere in the airport.

One of my good friends just returned thru Jo-burg 4th trip this year and he swears that for $20 US offered in advance, telling them your rifle is very delicate and you don't want it disturbed they, not only don't check the numbers, they don't open the case!

It gives him peace of mind concerning his guns getting thru with no hassle but he also admits that anything could be flying in the belly of the plane in a gun case for $20.

Bad business for actual security and could be very bad news for us gun toters since we already get hassled at every turn. It would be great to get it cleared up but I doubt you will get the a lot of the victims to be the cure!

I know I'm part of the problem, but I just throw some 5's at them, and say thanks...I could give a crap less about 20$ in tips when I'm spending 1000s on vacation. I would rather they get a tip and me not worry about my stuff not making it, or being held up....

David/Muletrain, we went through last June but had to wait a long while until our guns were brought out; then sign them in. The Spider was there in his web. One ole boy tried to argue his bow wasn't covered by SAPS. He lost the argument. Also, they (SAPS) insisted each hunter produce their 4457 and letter of invitation for those transiting onto another country. That's really none of their affair, but opens the door for extortion.

Just curious since I am going back in August this year, where in the baggage claim area was this at? I looked all around and saw no sign of an area where I needed to sign them in like we did in the old baggage area.

Sorry to everyone for going off topic some.

Never give them crap. When they make the veiled threat about making sure my guns make it, I snap a quick camera phone photo of them and tell them I'm not worried about it. They always look pissed but I could couldn't care less and my stuff always makes it.

I never give those bastards a red cent.

When asked for a "tip", I usually respond with "you want a tip? Here's one for ya.. Go get an education.. There's your tip of the day.."

Sometimes it goes over their heads, and sometimes it hits home real fast.

I've never been harassed for tips at O.R.Tembo but obviously it does happen. I advise my clients to use a meet/greet/permit service and so far none of them have said they had any problems.

With the new terminal the whole process is a snap and there are fewer opportunities for you to be approached. If you have not been to O.R. Tembo lately you'll be pleasantly surprised. I found it last year to be the least intimidating of any international airport I've been through.

This was my very experience last May, he leans in close, acting like he is looking for a particular case and nearly whispers "you have something for me", to which I responded "what?" he says again a bit louder, "do you have something for me?" I looked at him and said "huh?" We continued this exchange a couple more times with him getting louder each time and when he was loud enough for people to hear him speak I nearly shouted, "No I don't have any money for you, why would I give you money?" To which my rifle was promptly put on the cart and wheeled out of there to get me moving. Although I don't want to profess to being to smooth here, truth is I couldn't tell what the hell he was saying until he had said it twice.Big Grin

You no longer "register" your guns in the baggage claim area. This went by the way in early 2009 I think. You now just proceed directly through customs (with your other bags) to the SAPS office.

There is a risk that small infractions can put you in a pickle with the SAPS or the security company employees. Particularly the latter, they have you in their little shakedown room. They have been "Trained" by foreign hunters to expect a tip for doing the job they are paid to do. Pay attention to the details so they don't "gotcha". Try not to tip guys, for the same reason you don't feed the baboons at Cape Point.

Just give them the tips I do, it really throws them off.

Tip 1: Buy low, sell high
Tip 2: Never eat yellow snow.

Then again you can all ways just give them some monoply money.

I found it's always good to have a big South African white PH with you who, when they start their hustling or trying to grab bags to help you with them, will just turn to them and say "F@&# OFF!" In my experience they tend to leave you alone then.

Oh dear please allow me a little chuckle to myself.
I see the majority of you guys responding with horror and distaste to the subject of this thread are from the "States". You guys bloody well invented the custom of tipping didn't you and you don't like it when it bites you.

If you abolished the practice from your own countries you would be doing the world a huge favour. I have vented my spleen elsewhere here on this forum or on NE about this subject.

Tipping to us down under types is a scourge on society and if I ever encountered it in NZ at an airport, such as you are finding in SA, I would probably haul my gun out of the case and shoot the bastard with the hand out on the spot, and be regarded a hero for doing so.

On my trip in '08 I researched literally every detail.....except tipping in the airport, and therefore wasn't up to speed on the common practice. So, when asked on arrival, I doled out dollar bills, as I certainly wanted to make sure I didn't have any problems getting my guns through SAPS, and I didn't.
Told this to my PH and he of course told me to tell them to "piss off" if they asked on my departure, which they did, and I responded accordingly. Unfortunately, their promise that my guns might not make it on the flight was kept....took over a week for them to get to DFW. I was increasingly confident I'd never see my guns again but they did make it.
Coincidence? Maybe but in hindsight my rifles are worth much more than the $5 tip I refused to give.
