CLICK ON THE PLAY BUTTON ABOVE Video taken by the trackers cell phone of a herd of buff they saw this morning in Burkina Faso. The clients were not even hunting buffalo, maybe they will change their mind now! I have seen some big herds, but never one this big! For those hunters who have not shot a Western Savannah buffalo. It is great value for money and while they may not look as impressive as their bigger cousins the cape buff, the hunt experience is identical and they are just as tough in terms of taking big caliber bullets. Impressive group of buffalo! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. Out of curiosity, can these buffalo be hunted legally and practically with a 300 win mag or a 338? ______________________ I'm not a great hunter...just a guy who loves to hunt.

I'm seeing a blank spot where the video should be DRSS Searcy 470 NE

It's no my thread but I take the liberty to answer. Yes it's legal in some westafrican countries. Burkina has no minimum caliber. I have seen a few buffalo get shot with 338 and found it to be a good caliber. I wouldn't be comfortable with a 300Win mag.

I know someone who regularly drops cape buffalo with one shot from a 308 Winchester. The right kind of bullet, and shot placement does the job.

100% correct. However I don't mind to take someone with a 338 on a westafrican buffalo because I know it works and had great penetration. Based on my experience with .300 calibers on mountain hunts, I would be surprised if it performs good on buffalo. Is it Possible? Sure it is but I don't to be there and maybe look for the buffalo

Just as they start crossing the road you can see a straggler on the far side. Looks like it went lame or something. Any idea on that? If they'd been hunting I might have thought it was the shot buff.

I have shot them with a 416 rem mag perfect shoulder shot and they took off like nothing happened (of course not too far). So I know they are tough. Am sure they will die with anything but big guns are meant for big beasts. If you only had those 2 calibers bring the 338 with good bullets.

Using 180 grain Woodleigh Hydros out of a .300H&H is devastating on buffalo.
