A friend came over the other night and asked to see some videos and pictures from our last Safari.

We were clicking though some and found these two videos. There is little light available but the songs are worth listening to.

This was later in the night the day I had killed the Lion. The celebration was just something spontaneously started across camp by the staff and brought over to us as we sat by the fire.

Ya'll just had too dang much fun on that safari!
In a way, I did too. The report, photos & videos of that trip entertained me greatly.
In the immortal words of Steely Dan "you go back Jack & do it again".

A good time was had by all even the singers in those videos I would say.

As far as "go back Jack and do it again", Joyce is down for the count right now but hopefully has plenty of time before our Moz trip next spring to be in Leopard killing form.

I remember when I shot my leopard and it was time for my song.We were driving back after killing my leopard and it was dark and all things were going on in my mind as the cruiser drove through the dirt roads bordered by the thick jesse and the clear starlit sky.Unfortunately all the issues in my life at the time seemed to dull the beauty of the moment.A bird flew across the cruiser and Blake shut the headlights and cut down speed.I said to Blake there are no ele here and we laughed as an ele trumpeted not far from us as we drove by and before I finished saying it.
Suddenly I heard the song as we arrived in camp.I said to myself ``this song is for you``
I wish I knew what the words meant as that would have made it more interesting.

I often watch the video of the song and celebration of my lion kill in the Selous. As good as, or better than, the memories of the hunt itself.

I'm with you Cal,

You couldn't believe how excited I was when we discovered these two "lost videos". That was an amazing day. The Lion celebration dance earlier was a great experience but this one around the fire was quite the surprise and completely "unscheduled". The staff was given the rest of the day off early that morning and we all cooked for ourselves around the fire while staff enjoyed their own party across camp.

They chose to bring that celebration to us.

As Andrew stated - an honor.

Interesting now that I'm thinking about it, I fast forward over the dead lion and directly to watch the song. It really is a beautiful and captivating melody.

Jim, I can't recall if I told you this, but when you shot your lion, I was in the fig tree at the head of the swamp across the river, looking for sitatunga for one of Richard's clients. I heard two lions roaring on your side of the river and hoped that your lucky day had come. Then, I heard the shots and the first round of singing, which must have lasted a full hour. It certainly brought a smile to my face.

Half considered taking the boat across to get your riot shotgun for the followup. That was some thick bush to slither through. Bit of a butt pucker till we found him dead. Cool

Glad you got to join us at dinner for Joyce's Reedbuck.

there truly is no better feeling,

Back in 2009 I was hunting Lord Derby with Idongo Safaris and on our return I had to shoot a shot against a cliff about a km before camp,

little did I know what a fabulous experience was awaiting me when I hit camp, the whole village came running up chanting and singing,

what I would do to hunt that area again, this time I would take a film crew just to capture that moment.

Africa was the evening we arrived in camp at pianupi(spelling)in Uganda. Steve and myself where sitting in front of his tent watching the camp fire burn and just relaxing and talking. I started to hear the villagers singing. it sounded a long ways off. it was just barely getting dark. The quiet time of evening when sound travels long distances. the singing was beautiful when i asked Steve about it. I found out that due to his lose of hearing he could not hear it. I really felt blessed to hear it. i asked if it has been set up by the camp staff as sometime is done to greet clients. He said he did not know he had not arranged it. we found out the next morning that it was spontaneous. The village was singing and dancing to bring us good luck. they had not had meat in the village for a long time so they wanted us to succeed. They knew if we got me they got some for themselves. One of my greats memories made all that much better due to the wonderful friend i got to share it with even if he could not hear it.. Once again I would like to thank Steve Shakari Robinson for being my friend and helping live some of the best days of my life. Thank you my friend!!!!

While transporting my lion back to our camp in Zambia, the trackers chanted "shumba poro," over and over. (I assumed it meant "dead lion.") They sang especially loud when we passed a school for trackers and only stopped when we parked at camp. Every member of the staff turned out to pat or pound the dead cat.

The trackers remembered me when I returned to the same camp two years later, and they sang, beat oil cans, and put on a dance that depicted my lion hunt. This was nearly two decades ago, and I couldn't understand a word they sang, but the sights and sounds of that performance are as imbedded in my memory as the hunt itself.

After the celebration depicted above in the videos two members of the Kaindu Trust board thanked Andrew, Joyce and I for the success of the hunt because they felt it was pivotal for the future success of Royal Kafue and thus the future revenue stream and meat for the village.

They sang because they were happy and thankful.

Pretty cynical. I suppose the only reason PH's even talk to us is to get a tip eh?

Actually I think you started talking to us sometime after the Sitatunga. You said, "Please don't burn all the wood in the country".
