Ladies and Gentlemen,

As you may know, recently a Zimbabwe PH was killed by an elephant. See Prior Post for the details.

In that prior post, there is mention of possibly making financial contributions to his widow.

I thought I would try to set up a system where those members who wanted to make contributions could do so. Instead of sending individual contributions directly to the widow, I thought it might work out better if everyone sent me their contribution. I could collect them and then make one wire transfer to the widow's account.

This is going to have to be a matter of trust since the checks would have to be made out to me. [I could set up a new account, but since I would be the one with signatory authority, it would be no better than just using my current account]. I would deposit them in my account and then wire out the total (I will add my own contribution and also pay for the wire transfer fees). [If I stop posting in two weeks and you see me driving around in a new car, you will know you trusted the wrong guy. ]

We should set a time limit on this. Funds received by Monday, April 25. All contributions received after that date will be returned to sender. This is NOT a tax deductible contribution.

Obviously, this is an entirely voluntary contribution. I will keep a record of the contributions just in case something unforeseen happens and I have to return everyone's money before it is sent to the widow. I will destroy that list once the funds are received by the widow.

If you want to make a contribution, but feel you might not "measure up to some of the big spenders", don't worry. Any contribution, no matter how small, will certainly be appreciated. I am not going to keep a list of the contributions once they are sent off. And that includes a "mental" list.

If you don't want to contribute. No problem. This is purely voluntary.

My condolences for this PH, but let's remember the soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen who die every day in the Middle East.

Just want to put "noble" in perspective.

This PH also fought in the wars of his day in one of the toughest units known. He survived that to live in troubled times and die as he did.

I know him and his family and I am contributing.

Carl Bradfield was stated in another thread, and accepted by Ganyana there.

So what is it, Branford or Bradfield?

No disrespect meant, I just want to get it straight. RIP.

Carl Bradfield is correct.

Carl Branford was a typo from the PH List (there is no ZIM PH named Carl Branford). I have confirmed this with Ganyana and separately confirmed it with Sally Brown at ZATSO.

I have independently confirmed from two different sources the contact information for Ann Bradfield and will be contacting her once the collections are completed.

"Rumours and speculation are rife amongst the Lowveld community on what transpired with the death of Carl Bradfield as a result of an elephant hunt that went terribly wrong on Wednesday March 30, 2005 in the Sengwe 2 hunting area. The purpose of this e-mail is to put this incident into its proper perspective, and we ask that anything contrary to this brief be put straight.

"Carl Bradfield was conducting an elephant hunt with an American client and was 'spooring' two elephant when they came across one of the elephants in thick scrub. The distance between the hunting party and the elephant was approximately 20 meters.

"Whilst Bradfield was 'glassing' the elephant to assess its suitability as a trophy, the wind changed direction, the elephant caught their scent and immediately started to charge the hunting party, upon which Carl Bradfield instructed his party to run. No shots were fired, nor were any shouts heard from Carl Bradfield by any member of the party.

"Upon regrouping, the hunting party started searching the area for Bradfield, as he was not responding to their calls. They finally located him and established that the elephant had caught and killed him, and had then left the area. Bradfield had been 'tusked' once from the groin through to the chest cavity and stomped on.

"This incident occurred at 7:30 am. The next day, on Thursday, March 31, 2005, at approximately mid-day, the National Parks Game Scout that had accompanied the hunting party, along with the National Parks Warden from Mabalahuta (according to National Parks Staff at Mabalahuta Headquarters), managed to track down the elephant responsible and destroyed it.

"Speculation is rife as to what actually went wrong. No one knows, and no one ever will. Your respect for elephant is certainly warranted when you read reports like this....."

Here at The Hunting Report, we contacted Bradfield's wife who sent us the following note: "Thank you for your condolences. We are still in complete shock. Being a hunter's wife, you always have this fear in the back of your mind but never expect it to happen. Carl was a very careful and experienced hunter. Being a white woman in Africa is not easy, and I still have a family to support. I will with heartfelt thanks accept support from some of Carl's clients who have expressed their wish to do so. I would also like it be known that Mr. James Brown (aka Mike Brown), who was more than a client as he was greatly respected and loved by Carl, did everything he could to make Carl's last journey home as trouble-free and dignified as possible. I thank God it was him on safari at the time, and I am forever grateful to him.

"To all Carl's clients, I didn't know he was so respected. I thank you for all your e-mails, messages and calls. I was always in the background doing what I could to make things easier for Carl and did get the chance to meet many of you. I appreciate that as it adds to the memories. It was Carl's wish that if anything happened to him we should try and keep the safaris going, which I am going to do.
