Greetings all,

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm going on my first African hunt in May. This hunt is for plains game and I'm using this as an introduction to Africa. I'm going to the SCI show in Vegas and going to look into a second trip for next year. I would like to hunt buffalo and what ever else is in the area.

What I have noticed and can't figure out is why the higher daily rate for buffalo? In some cases it can be 3x as much. Again, I'm sorry for the ignorance but I'm trying to understand.

Will

Dangerous game daily rates are always higher than plainsgame.

If anything goes wrong on the hunt, it is your PH's responsibility ultimately, to sort things out, at a much higher risk to his health than plains game.

Good luck on your first safari!

I think the main reason is the fact that they have less buffalo on quota, there fore the daily rates are higher.

Also, on plains game hunting, you most probably will be hunting on a farm, where the animals have been raised.

Hunting buffalo you will be hunting on wild areas.

This means the logistics of setting up camp and supplying it are far more expensive.

I am sure some of our oytfitters here will give you a lot more details.

Saeed,

Are you saying there are no pen-raised or fenced buffalo hunts available to hunters?

If memory serves me right there was quite a shit-storm blowing over some fellow who paid through his nose to bang a monster whose photo showed him behind a corral.

I think the question was for the normal increase of prices for a buffalo hunt rather than a plains game hunt.

Some idiot from Wall Street, who knows nothing about hunting, and just wants bragging rights against his fellow idiots from the SCI INNER CIRCLES, and pays $100,000 for a buffalo is in a different league altogether. clap

Will,

The more desirable animals to hunt are priced accordingly.

If you are looking for a buff bargain I would wait and see what is on offer here on AR later on in the season.

Basic high school math: supply vs. demand.
Lots more plains game.
Fewer buffalo.
Fewer elephants.
Still fewer lion.
Very few white rhino.
Hardly any black rhino.

Yep, supply and demand, justified by the physical danger involved with DG I suppose, and rightly so..

It costs x dollars to provide any kind of hunt, so what is offered can mean a difference in price but be careful here..Some outfits offer cheap daily rates and high trophy fees, the next guy offers high daily rates and cheap trophy fees, just the opposite, bottom line it both are about the same money..

IMO, based on being in the business for many years, that to save a couple of grand on a African hunt can be a big mistake. Your flying half way around the world and doing a hunt of a lifetime, don't cheap it out, wait another year and save the couple of grand. Not saying don't shop for the best bang for your buck but to be aware of whats offered for your buck. As a first timer it is confusing for sure, so take your time and plan ahead. That's half the fun of a safari.

Ray,

I have not always agreed with what you have written on AR but your advise to WLW on choosing a safari is spot on.
