Use my Tikka T-3 Superlite synthetic stainless in 7mm Rem Mag for 99% of my hunting here.

We built up Joyce's 7 x 57 with the same idea in mind.

My choice would be what I took to the Selous before. A Model 70 Winchester African Classic in .416 Rem using Northfork 370 grain softs followed by 370 grain solids by same maker. My plains game rifle was a Model 70 Winchester Custom from their Shop in .358 STA using 270 grain Softs from Northfork. Both rifles and chamberings performed flawlessly on Buffalo and Zebra, Kongoni, and impala. By taking two rifles it gave me an excuse to buy something else after I convinced my wife it was necessary for Africa. My hope is she doesn't hear otherwise before I pass on to happy hunting land. Good Shooting.

Actually I am quite fond of the 7 X 57 as I love all things Mauser. If it was good enough for Walter Dalrymple Maitland Bell, it's good enough for Africa.

Plus it's tons more interesting than yet another .270 Win.

The .270 would be my choice any day over the 7x57.

But that's just based on ballistics and experience, as opposed to pure BS.

When we were deciding whether to build up a .270 or 7 x 57 for Joyce I bought both in Tang Safety Rugers. We took both to the range and she shot quite a few rounds out of both and she is the one that chose the 7 x 57. She found the perceived recoil slightly tamer so we build her rifle based on the 7 x 57. Seemed proper for Africa as well.

The irony is she mostly hunts now with one of my Tikka T-3 Superlites in 7mm Rem Mag coming in at under 7 pounds with the scope.

I guess perceived recoil is just that. Perceived. Big Grin

I have no experience of the .270 but surely it is deemed another classic? For bush work at 100 - 200 yards both should do the trick. My all time favourite medium calibre was the .06

FFS here we go again. So a 150gr bullet traveling at 2,800 fps from a .270 kills so much better and is so much flatter shooting than a 150gr bullet traveling at 2,750 fps from a 7x57.

If you are one of the blessed souls out there, you take your Blaser and 2 barrels.....

For me - .375 HH and .270 Win.

I know you are very jealous, but I can handle the admiration...

Andrew,
Agree on the .06, but I'd call it a light rifle. It's done well for me for game up to wildebeest. I wouldn't shoot an eland with it. That said, I'm sure I could kill a buff with it, but would never try.

When I was young I killed quite a few buff with the .06. The 220 solid was wicked.

That post brings back memories of my father who was often heard saying "The 30-06 can take anything that walks, crawls or flies". He mentioned going with me to Africa, and when I asked what he wanted to hunt he said only cape buffalo. When I told him the 30-06 was not legal for Buffalo he said loudly "then I ain't going!", and he didn't go even after I told him he could use my 375 H&H Mag bolt rifle to shoot the buffalo, to which he replied, " I don't need no cannon to kill a damn milk cow!" Big Grin

Lots of combinations work well, so its just opinnion on anybodys part...Thinking back I mostly used a .338 Win. and a 404 or 416 Rem. but often enough I used a 450-400-3" I had 3 of them, a Jefferys, a Army-Navy and a Searcy, all 3 were exceptional rifles in every respect..I also had a super accurate Searcy 470 that Butch won the world with sold to me then traded me back out of it.

Today Id just take my 375 and perhaps my 7x57..Like I said lots of workable choices out there..and the 30-06 is always a great option.

One thing to consider is if your hunting in DG country, be armed with enough gun to fend off DG while hunting PG, or camp meat..I recall running into a mad buff with a wire snare on his leg. I also recall something of that sort happening to one of Saeeds guests while we were hunting in Tanzania, the guest and Richard (pH) Pierres brother in law ran afoul a mad and wounded buff that scuffed them up a bit..

Allow me to cheat just slightly, my switch barrel Sauer in 300 wing mag & 375 HH and my Kgun in 450/400.

I thought next time I go over I'd take my model 71 in 348 and my 1895 in 405. Keep everything up close and personal, sort of. dancing

I like this duo a lot!

I used something similar twice in Zambia, a 404 Jeffery and a 35 Whelen. I think a 338-06 would be great also.

The problem of course, is if your ammo for either the 35 Whelen or 338-06 do not show up in Africa, you will not find backup ammo. Hence my secondary choice in my OP of 338WM along with the 404J.

And perhaps the 9.3x62 is just better, for both ammo availability and DG backup. But I like the .423 & .338 caliber separation really well!

A .458 Lott and .375 H&H are what I took on my first trip. If I get to go again, it will be a .375 H&H and either a .30-06 or a .300 Winchester.

Andrew,

Ammunition weight is always a major concern unless my wife is traveling with me, but I'll include some 220 grain solids in the future.

There is a CZ 550 in .458 Lott that is for sale in the DSC newsletter, but most recommend getting them tuned up, right?

Send it to Wayne at American Hunting Rifles for a No.3 package and you will end up with a beautiful and reliable rifle. His specialty is CZ 550 rifles. None better.

Being as I don't already have a two gun set up like our host which does make a lot of sense I guess I will take my 404 and my 9.3x62. I still have killed most game in Africa and the USA with my second hand $90 Model 721 30/06.
I have four 375's and a great 416 Rem Mag but as I get older I like a tad less recoil if I can get it.
I don't own a 318 Westley Richards yet but I reckon that would get the job done with less recoil.
If you said I had to run out the back door right now with only one rifle...it is me and ought 6 still.
It is fun dreaming about it all.
