African gun and game laws are not always obvious to me. And they do change from time to time.

Is a 223 Remington legal in Africa ? Which countries ?

Not looking for a recommendation for its use, though in the past I have talked to Boers who used it on small antelope species, just its legality.

I took my .223 to South Africa in June of this year. Hunted with a friend who had his there as well. Works great on the little guys.

Shoot monkeys and then more monkeys with it. We used it on springbok as well, but monkeys were more fun...

I won't pretend to know all the current gun regs in all of the countries we represent, but in RSA, only the rimfires will be illegal to hunt big game with starting in February of 2008. At least that is what is currently posted. I've taken the .223 twice to RSA and took many animals with it (hunt report posted). My PH took 3 Dassie's in a matter of two minutes with mine at 200 yards. The 60 grain Nosler partition did a number on the "rock rabbits." As my friend BradC mentioned, any of the pygmy antelope up to Springbok are perfect for the .223 WITH partitions. I wouldn't recommend "varmit" bullets as your asking for trouble in the way of lost game or ruined capes/skins. Personally, my caliber of choice for Monkeys would be the .17 HMR as you would get a good look at them in one piece Big Grin I will most likely take my .223 to Zim next year. Their gun regs are much more relaxed but always check with your PH before you go. In Africa, laws change with the wind. Good hunting, David

.223 is legal for class "d" game (ie- the smaller stuff up to impala size) in Zim. AR15s' and Bruno/CZ .223 bolt action rifles are pretty popular here owing to cheep south african millitary ball ammo which seems to arrive in fair quantities. Wink

That's good to hear Ganyana. I might opt for some Zim hardball next year for small fry. I really look forward to returning, the country offers a lot and I hope for the best in your future! Good hunting, David

I was in RSA this spring and took Klipspringer, Duiker and Steenbok with a .223. The Klipspringer proved to be a tough old cuss, but the other two were DRT.
