I had a gemsbok cold one year ,, Broadside standing at about 150 yards. Perfect rest. I knew that they sold the meat so didn't want to waste too much so shot it right behind the shoulder.

It took off running to beat hell and I had one of my stupid attacks. ' You are running from has already killed you!'

I had a job for a while as a Village Idiot.

It ran a hundred yards and stopped. I waited patiently for it to topple ..

And then it headed at about Mach 4 for the thorn bush.

Aiiieee ! I missed the running shot at about 250 and it got into the cover ...

I suspect my wife started to weep ...for herself ..

At that time I did not know where the nasty oryx had their vital organs .. Should have read Robertson's book first, I reckon.

Eventually I got another chance at it and this time I kept shooting ..

I don't actually see that much on hunting shows. Especially with bow hunting, the deer is out of sight before any one could possibly nock another arrow.

But there are many other things I could complain about. My latest peeve is all the women and children on hunting shows.

And sure, I did know the moose was dead on his feet. But I always shoot until the critter falls.

This moose took 5 250gr NPOs before he decided to tip over...

you just prove that 338 win mag is not enough caliber for moose lol .... get a bigger gun.

Ok here's one more tv hunting show bit of stupidity. I watched Brush Country Monsters today. They were deer hunting in Colorado. The guy spots a big one out in a field and gets ready to shoot. Directly behind the deer are farm buildings and a road with traffic on it. Of course he takes a shot at the deer from some stupidly far range which he fortunately hits. One wonders though where the bullet would have gone if he had missed.

I guess the rules of gun safety don't apply to him. "Be sure if your target and what's beyond". A complete idiot in my opinion.

I saw that show.

As long as we are complaining...did anyone catch the show where a guy shoots a dinky moose and says "He will go 35-45 inches"

That thing was not even close to 45; if it hit 35 he would be lucky.

Never saw it so not defending it but often the camera greatly compresses distances. I was looking at some antelope footage from a hunt we did last week and as the buck walks along you can clearly see a farm behind him that looks very close. I never even noticed it while filming. I know for fact the farm was just under 2 miles away yet it looks a few hundred yards away on camera. The other thing that occasionally happens is that the cameraman is at a very different angle to the shooter and the shooter actually had a clear background. Those could be explanations or perhaps the shooter just wasn't safety conscious...never saw it so can't say for sure.

My peeve on TV shows is when they obviously reenact a stalk and cameraman is between the shooter and the animal or the shooter is inside a blind and the cameraman is filming from outside. Reality TV that ain't! All shows need to reenact a bit just for cutaways but show it like it really was!
