For those that follow TZ hunting news, there has been a lot of confusion and rumors about imminent block re-allocation. Back in January the current hunting term that was due to expire on 31st Dec 2009 was extended until 31st Dec 2012 by the Minister.

At SCI, the Minister issued an official, public statement to this effect at a gathering of TZ outfitters, TAHOA and a few journalists as well as SCI. Since then, politicians and Parliament have been tryig to overturn that decision at every occasion.

The extension was discussed in Parliament yesterday and it was unanimously passed as it stood. IOW, the current hunting term will now expire on 31st Dec 2012. What this means is that the block re-allocation will take place at the end of this term (2012) BUT the Ministry will communicate to all operators what their "new" blocks will be for the period 2013 to 2017 by mid 2010 giving operators a 2 year notice.

I suspect prices will be ammended then too.

Its no secret that the Gov expects more revenue and their way of trying to make this happen is to "raise' prices.

We also know that the WD has commissioned a document on the assessment of all hunting blocks with the aim of grading these. The graded blocks will fetch a different "lease" amount based on whether it is an "A" grade or "B" grade, etc. Of course they never considered how on earth will operators successfuly market if they end up with only B, C or D grade blocks Roll Eyes

In addition, they are looking at ways to increase the number of blocks and so sub-dividing existing ones is the easiest solution. Guess what will happen to the quota?

That is what everyone said when they had the last price increase.

Ummmm, it will be evenly distributed between the sub-divided blocks, unless there is compelling reason to allocate a higher percentage of the quota for particular animals to one area versus another, while of course not exceeding the current total quota allocation? Wink

yes and that is one reason why i have been getting emails and seen posted here, greatly reduced prices on Tz. hunts. part of the reason is certainly the general economy and part of the reason is the sky high prices for hunts there. and just for the record, i have hunted in the Selous as well as Moz. and much prefer Moz.!!! more bang for the buck.

I've got to agree with tradewinds on this one. People complained once and yet still bucked up and people will do it again. I do believe everyone in all the countries are feeling the pinch. I've been seeing discounts from everyone. I think it has more to do with the economy than Tanzania's prices.

Personally I think I'd rather see the prices go up than have them divide the blocks into tiny pieces and up the quotas. Maybe they'll divide the Selous blocks into quarters, so the outfitters will have just enough room to put up a tent!
