Hi all.

Due to a possible cancellation it looks like I might have a spare week to ten days in RSA half way through a five week wing shooting trip some time in June. I'm not sure what to do as the price of the flight back may be better spent on staying in Africa and doing something fun.

I don't have a particularly big budget so I was thinking of either some fly fishing or some cull hunting. I could get to Moz or Zambia for the right ideas.

Any suggestions?

I was thinking of heading across Mozambique to the coast armed with a fly rod and a box of fluff.

What is the fishing like in RSA? I'm not much of a fan of still waters and prefer to target wild fish if possible.

Moz (esp coastal) fishing is very good indeed but getting there would be a bit of a schlep for you.

RSA has some good stillwater & river fishing & not just for trout either. Check here for an example. tu2

Another alternative is to go to KZN & fish for tigers (not the best time of year if I remember correctly) & also do the KZN battlefield route. tu2

I can give you some great recommendations if you need them.

Hey Steve. Could I fly from Joburg out to the Moz coast?

I've always found the yellowfish intriguing as its like fishing for a carp with salmonoid tactics, and they grow to a decent size.

Tigers would also be fun.

Kiri,

We fly fish everywhere in Africa. Little brother is an expert in Yellows. We call them bonefish of the freshwater.

I need some meat in June. Why do you not do a 2 day cull shoot with us, and then go 3 days flyfishing. Not me or my brother is available, but I can ask Armand (PH) to drive you if you give him something and cover the cost?

Email me.

On Moz. You can fly from Johannesburg to Inhambane direct. Word of caution though, if you do not get a guide and go to the right place you will waste a lot of money and time, but at least drink some nice cold D2M beer!

June not good time for tigers on the fly unless you fly to Zambia and take on the Barotse flats.
Not cheap.

Flight cost is about $900.00

On the border of Limpopo/Mpumalanga. just over two hours from airport.

Blesbok, Impala, Blue Wildebeest. All cull stuff only, NO trophies.

There are some good birds around my place as well, but it will all be swainsons mostly, walking up. You can stay here on my farm, will cost you and arm and a leg of course...LOL!

Drop me a line when you know mate.

Cheers,

Thanks Charl,

I will let you know when I find out next week.

I hunted Natal Francolin in that neck of the woods a couple of years ago I think. They would jump up on a branch while looking at the dogs below trying to find them!!

What's the upside down shit? Now I'm really scared especially after ALL THE STORIES I've been told...

By the way Luan, I'm a sucker for good fishing rods myself so I feel for ya man, but what on earth made you leave it there to go make a piña colada while fishing? Or was it a mint julep Steve?

Congrats from this end too.

The really funny thing is my last words to him when he was in the fishing shop was don't buy expensive tackle in case you lose it & my last words to him as he was tackling up was whatever you do, don't put the rod down for a millisecond once the bait is on the water!

I laughed my nuts off when he called me & said, FOK, YOU'LL NEVER BELIEVE IT!

Here is my favorite fishing story:

A young guy from North Dakota moves to Florida and goes to a big "everything under one roof" department store looking for a job.

The Manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?" The kid says "Yeah. I was a vacuum salesman back in North Dakota."

Well, the boss was unsure, but he liked the kid and figured he'd give him a shot, so he gave him the job.
...
"You start tomorrow. I'll come down after we close and see how you did."

His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After the store was locked up, the boss came down to the sales floor.

"How many customers bought something from you today?" The kid frowns and looks at the floor and mutters, "One". The boss says "Just one?!!? Our sales people average sales to 20 to 30 customers a day.

That will have to change, and soon, if you'd like to continue your employment here. We have very strict standards for our sales force here in Florida. One sale a day might have been acceptable in North Dakota, but you're not on the farm anymore, son."

The kid took his beating, but continued to look at his shoes, so the boss felt kinda bad for chewing him out on his first day. He asked (semi-sarcastically), "So, how much was your one sale for?"

The kid looks up at his boss and says "$101,237.65".

The boss, astonished, says $101,237.65?!? What the heck did you sell?"

The kid says, "Well, first, I sold him some new fish hooks. Then I sold him a new fishing rod to go with his new hooks. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast, so I told him he was going to need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him a twin engine Chris Craft. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that 4x4 Expedition."

The boss said "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and a TRUCK!?"

The kid said "No, the guy came in here to buy tampons for his wife, and I said, 'Dude, your weekend's shot, you should go fishing!’

Hey Mike, I was a scuba and free diving instructor in a past life before the city swallowed my life up. You wouldn't believe it to look at my gut these days though!!!! Middle age is catching up.

I reckon I could still work out which way to strap a tank on though if the opportunity arose.

I looks like some one else is taking half the dates though so I reckon time may be a bit tight to get to the coast for diving and fly back.

Fallow I'm not sure what you like to do.

There is fly fishing in various parts of South Africa, some on rives, some on dams. You can fish tigers in Jozini in KZN, not Zambezi tigers, but still tigers. I'm not sure how the fishing is there the last few years. You can also do some surf fishing or deep sea game fishing off the coast.

There is lots of wingshooting.

At that time of the year you would be able to set up some plains game hunting as well. Some can be done close to, or together with wingshooting or fishing.

Due to game densities on the large game ranches you can get a lot done in a week.

Leadwood,

I'm hosting clients for five weeks of wing shooting and plains game so was hoping to get a few days to chill out with a fly rod in between safaris. It now looks like some wildebeest culling has taken the last five days of my break so I won't be able to travel as far as I hoped.

One day I would like to head out to Moz for a couple of weeks to fish the surf line and inshore reefs with a fly rod.
