I watched this incredible movie over the weekend. It was shown on the National Geographic channel on our TV here in South Africa. A very graphic must-watch for all of those who want to know the real truth about the lives of wild free-living lions in Africa. They kill and eat each other!!!! Every greenie who mouthed if off about Cecil needs to be shown this movie - I'm sure they will be horrified. I'm also sure this is why there is no mention of it on any of their websites. I see it can be downloaded off the internet - but my connection out here in the bush is too slow . I urge you all to see this movie and to spread the truth about lion behavior to those who care to ignore it.

Kevin, thanks for the warning about the graphic content, I am of the opinion that more people should see the reality and brutally of nature. We are living in a society where the reality is kept away from the younger generation. Like you I grew up on a farm and so did many other members of this forum. We learned and grew up with the reality, life and death, that is why we can understand nature and the circle of life. We know that wild animals are not fluffy cute little pets, something the greens do not understand.

It is time that we stop hiding the reality in which Africa's wildlife is surviving, yes it is sometimes cruel and brutal, but that is reality.

Thanks for this info.
I started my career in the Sabi Sands in 1979 , at Londolozi - they actually had a hunting section, also worked as a PH and manger for Sabi Sabi ( again they also did some hunting ) and then as a Manager for Mala Mala , who ALSO had a hunting section operating out of Trekker Trails camp.

Nomadic lions were observed killing and eating pride lions and their off spring back then but it was never well documented. In one year there was a coalition of 2 fully mature lions that never ever took a territory they just went from area to area killing or chasing off the territorial male . One wonders if this was not more frequent in this area than elsewhere as I have not realy observed this to the same degree in Botswana , Mozambique or Tanzania ???

I visited Londolozi and Mala Mala as a guest of SATOUR in 1983 and was on a "game drive" at Londolozi with other tourists when a hunting party drove past us with a kudu in the back of the vehicle. The comments from my group were as negative as could be expected, and although I tried to explain hunting's role in conservation I failed miserably.

When I said I had just spent ten days hunting in Zimbabwe's Matetsi, I suddenly was the odd man out of our group. It's amazing how rude and insulting so-called "sensitive and caring" people can be to those who don't share their beliefs.

Bill , unfortunately in 1983 I was in the military between time in Londolozi (1979) and Mala Mala (1986). Back then , there was even a negative attitude in the photo tourism camps , thats why none of those lodges let it be known that they still had hunting sections. Even though most of the Sabi Sands was developed from a hunting heritage. Not sure if you heard that Mala Mala was land claimed by the local community and the government is alledged to have paid out over a billion rands for the settlement . The Sabi Sands was is and will always be a spectacular place to view big game, thanks to hunters having the presence of mind to conserve the area when everybody else was eradicating wildlife for farming.

When there, I spent an hour or so at Londolozi interviewing David Vardy, who owned the place then, and was impressed with his plans for expanding and protecting the Sabi Sands for wildlife. Was he able to get other landowners and Kruger Park to remove their boundary fences?

As for African lions killing and eating their own kind, I'm not surprised. During the three years or so I hunted mountain lions in Arizona, my friend's hounds found four different yearling lions that had been killed and partially eaten by other lions.

My friend and other houndsmen claimed older lions would not tolerate young males in their territories.

There is nothing "sensitive and caring" about these clueless idiots whatsoever.

We were ate a private game reserve in South Africa, and the sort of people we saw there was mind boggling!!

There was a Russian couple who never left camp??

We saw women ASLEEP while their truck was parked 40 yards from lions mating?

We saw so many individuals taking photos with their smart phones - despite the animals being quite far away fro that.

We heard on the radio that they were closing a certain area for visitors. And when we asked what the reason was, we were told one of the lions has a wound, and they needed to tranquilize it and attend to the wound.

We talked to the vet in charge, and asked if we can go with them when they did this.

To say they were surprised by our request would be a very big under statement!

But, surprising, they were very pleased that someone actually has an interest in the animals that went further than just look at them.

We went with them, and they shot the lion with a sleeping dart, and they checked its wound, which luckily did not look as bas as they had originally thought.

Yes Bill, the "sensitive and caring" lot out there with loud mouths are nothing but enemies of wildlife in general.

In addition to being loudmouth enemies of wildlife, they are ignorant world-class hypocrites.

That's why I placed quotation marks around "sensitive and caring" in my original post. They are anything but that.

During the more than half a century as a columnist, editor, publisher, and finally an author specializing in hunting topics, I've learned that facts will never change their minds.

I have reached the age I now just ignore them.

Yes Bill the fence did eventualy come down and most of the private parks next to the KNP are now part of what they call the Greater KNP , the Varties expanded into a group called The Conservation Corporation but it imploded and they went back to Londolozi , John Varty is involved with Tigers now but have heard little of David. Both were visionaries in their time.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been able to down load about an hour of the documentary. Now I am trying to find the rest of it. Very interesting. Have never heard of a coalition of this size before. Killing 100+ competitor lions in a year is not what the greens want to hear about or see. Life for a 13 year old pride male like Cecil never ends well.

Regarding your question about showing it at DSC, depending on your time allotment and if the producers let you edit parts of it to cut down on the time, I think it is a good idea.

Good idea, and timely considering all that has transpired in 2015. The more you know ....

The reason I want my daughter to see this is she professes to love lions. So do I. However, she disagrees with hunting lions. I've tried to reason with her. I've showed her how hunting lions actually benefits the species as a whole. Her focus is on the destruction of cubs upon the death of a pride male. I'd like to show her what happens to an old male if he is not hunted. I know it's not pretty. She needs to see it too.

Can't believe I got faked out by the adobe window. I'm usually smarter than that. I'll give it another shot later. Took me a longtime yesterday to rid my computer of "mackeeper".

Yes this was a great documentary, a bit shocking on a few fronts, so many killed, slow killing/deaths & the guides/people in charge not helping out some, heck we have modified ever other thing in nature surely they could speed up a already dying Lions departure, I think it had been sanitized a bit for family viewing as I saw it on TV & some of the cub killing & other death scenes were cut or shortened !

Oh and wasteful of some great Lions, I only want one .

Saw a similar doc on Tigers & how one extraordinary male killed all other males & cubs in a huge area, then held the area killing all comers for some time with no new cubs born as he was STERILE, luckily his bother came of age & killed him, that Tiger could of been reasonable for the extinction of Tigers if the numbers were at tipping point or boarder line !!
