I see guys wearing these covers over their watches on the shows on TV. They look like little gaitors. I am heading over for the 3rd time and I want one of these things, but I cant find them. Anyone know where I could get one?

You can get a band with a velcro cover for the crystal:

http://www.awsin.com/products.asp?id=233

or turn the watch face inward.

I have not hunted with a PH who did either, but have only made two trips.

The best and quickest solution is any place that sells athletic gear..plain old cotton wristbands. Get black. Cheap and they work while protecting your watch.

Leave it in camp. Why watch the clock. They'll wake you up in the morning and sundown will tell you when to stop hunting.

Any old plastic Casio or other cheap watch, rip off the wrist band and put the watch in a pocket. That way it's light, will fit in any pocket (such as a shirt pocket), won't reflect light, etc. Most of these models don't make any noise whatsoever, unless you set them up for bells and whistles!

I think those are hair bands that the ladies where with certain pulled back hair styles.

The simpliest is just take it off... Your on safari, what the hell are you worried about what time it is... Ask the PH.
While on safari I only worry about what time to get up and they get me up.. Pills at lunchtime...
Sundowner at the campfire...

I wear a watch 24/7. I would feel naked without one.

I also never bother to cover it up while hunting.

Seems as though Dave Fulson's suggestion of an athletic wrist band would do the trick, though, if you are worried about it.

I've also wondered about these "watch gaiters" since seeing Boddington wear one in Tracks Across Africa. Is his a home-made version, or are they available for sale somewhere? Like mrlexma, I prefer to wear my watch when hunting, fishing, and most other times.

I think a better question is "What are they for?"

You could make up something like this:

http://www.kitbag.com.au/category209_1.htm

The next one is very popular amongst trademen in Australia.

Or make your own:

I've always worn a watch with the face inward on the wrist. It's more convenient to start with and you don't have to worry about reflection or the tritium being seen by game.

Why fool with one? I wear my watch normally. When we get anywhere close to game, and are stalking it, I put the watch in my pocket.

Is there any other purpose to covering up your watch than preventing a reflection from scaring the game?

Wearing the face inward solves any problem. No need for a "gaitor". Just another place for ticks.

Obviously if "Special Ops" and other military units use them there must have some use and function? Funny how some laugh off these things without even checking out the product and their function. Thanks all for posting the outlets where these can be seen and purchased. Looks like a good way to protect your valued timepiece, but if you are using a $6 Wal Mart special, probably not worth it. Wearing a wristwatch upside down on your arm seems to defeat the purpose of having one at all??

It is pretty easy to read by turning your wrist.

First it protects the crystal in rough terrain and keeps it from getting scratched to hell. Second and more importantly it prevents any reflection. Nothing gives away a position faster than a flash of light. Is it "necessary" on a safari? Probably not but you can certainly spook an animal with a flash of light. Personally I dont wear a watch while hunting. Many years ago when I was still enlisted we used to make our own. Nothing to it really.

the army issued them to us in Vietnam, at least in the Ranger Companies. Only one problem with the first issue ones; they had a velcro covering you had to peel back to see the time. Very important to have for night watch. Do your hour, and then wake the guy on your right for his hour. Pass him the watch.

I guess I have worn a watch too long and feel lost without one. On safari, like mentioned here,, you really don't need one but habits are hard to break. What I do take is a cheap watch like a timex expedition,,, velcro ban, black, very little to create glare, has an indiglo feature so when My body is upside down and I wake up I know how much more rack time before first coffe...... but the number one feature.. No Alarms on it.... so no beeping on the hour or alarms to accidentily go off at the wrong time....I do like the idea of black wrist band to cover it,,,

you can make more money, you can not make more time

I'm used in haing always a watch on me, usually is medium big and heavvy enouhg, because I had been a diving instructor. The first time that I went in Namibia I bought a Citizen ecodrive watch, the Titanium model, that resist to 20atm. It has sapphire glass, big tritium point to bee visiblee in the dark and some other features, it is satinated. I have a commando watch band, but I never thought to use with it.
It is not particularly comfortable and it is annoying when wet for perspiration, and after some time it smells too.

Use your watch normally, it is near to impossible to have some problem, unless it begin to ring or it is noisy like a clock. Relax you are gonig to hunt, you are not going to war.
