Our guests last night at our monthly meeting were Meeghan Bell (Wildlife Inspector for USF&W, Memphis office) and John Rayfield, Resident Agent in Charge, TN/KY US Fish and Wildlife Agency. Many topics were discussed including the USF&W's policy on the importation of sport hunted Elephants from Zimbabwe and Zambia. Permits will be reviewed on a individual basis. There is a large backlog so if you have a permit waiting to be approved or denied, it's going to be a matter of patience. Inspector Bell said she and her small staff process 1200-1500 imports per month. LDK

Thought I would add this link on Zim's Elephant policy. Elephant in Zimbabwe

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

I have always been advocate of getting rid of cattle from federal lands and manage it for wildlife
Funny how we support it ( no cattle on range ) in Africa and get up in arms here in States ( Bundy fiasco )

That is the Conservative rural Vote bank.

Government and tax payer subsidy is their "right" and it should be increased at the expense of health care and education for the poor and sick.

Since all the bison and most of the ungulates are gone. The cattle are needed to help consume the excess fuel that burns everything in sight up each summer.

The government makes money on timber sales, but they get sued by environmentalists oppotunists before each timber sale. More fuel, and poof, more fire.

Private forest land doesn't burn up. The trees are thinned - that provides second growth brush that the ungulates chow un yields good hunting. They have cattle graze the range land just enough to also feed elk, deer, moose, and indirectly the wolves.

This is complicated stuff. Please visit me out here in Idaho. I will arrange a big tour, and introduce you to ranchers, opportunists, true environmentalists, hunting outfitters and guides, and show you the lands in question. It is fascinating, and troubling at the same time. Please visit. Then you can talk with some authority on the topics.

Did they mention anything on the backlog regarding bontebok imports? Had a client wanting to hunt one, he called USFW directly, and they couldn’t give him a timeframe.

"Sir, we are sorry to inform you that your application is still under review, thank you for asking though"

"Mam, how long now to go? I have submitted ALL the documentation?"

"Sir, I am sorry, there is no way to tell. We have over 1000 applications that we have to process on a case by case study of enhancement basis"

USFW IS A JOKE!!!! NO leopard imports from RSA nobody knows anything on elephants, yet Rhino export no problem at all... the only animal really in decline is Rhino... but we can hunt as many as we want with no issues getting a permit.... there must be less than 20000 left.... there is so many elephants just in the greater Kruger area alone!!!! A clear sign that nothing that USFW do makes any sense.

Lawndart makes excellent points. Managing the western lands (fed and state) is a daunting challenge. Numerous federal and state agencies conflict on management practices. Add in pubic comments and media hysteria all lead into a boiling culdron.
