It's discouraging, but overall, not as bad as was initially anticipated.

Did I read this right, that the black wildebeest is now protected in SA? If so, why?

Little seems to have changed from many old regs.......the obvious new exceptions being the canning regs and bow. Am I wrong? Discouraging? Not really.

Black wildebees are endemics (some have been transplanted, yes) that should carry some status that may help maintain species integrity ITO genetic health/ cross breeding. (if this will aide in that)

Regs go into effect on June 1st. No more airgun, .17 or .22 rimfire; hunting with dogs (there goes Caracal cat, Blue Duiker and Bushpig hunting), Archery hunts for thick skinned DG is out; it gets better but I'll be there on June 1st and have a ring side seat to this fiasco. Should be a real Bozo the Clown show. Big Grin

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

kayaker,

I hunted last April on the DeBeers Estate and took a nice Black Wildebeest while there. There were plenty of them in the wide pans so I don't understand the protection for them. Are they rare in SA or am I missing something in your posting?

After April there should be more clarity in which animals will appear on the protected species list.
