How Did Operators feel Dallas went?

I would be interested how operators felt the show at Dallas went as a reflection on the economy and how they think Reno will be.

From our side Dallas was excellent. It was the best show yet for our little company. I feel that this is due to a slightly false economy been Texas seems to stand alone and I doubt that Reno will be as good.

Also the fact that ever year ,we like every operator, have more clients hence more word of mouth which helps with selling.

Other interesting trends we found was that the elephant bulls sold very well indeed, possibly due to Bots situation.( Some bookings as far out as 2015)

Leopard that were the flavor of the month last year were slow and lions were also very good for 2013 but no interest in them for 2014- this may be due to the worry that they will be banned or possible issues with export on the horizon.

Final observation is that Dallas is a FAR more operator friendly show the SCI. They actually made us feel welcome. Well done Dallas!

I always find after show feed back to be interesting. I am not surprised that some specific operators, especially African operators had a good show. I would also not be surprised that hunts for trophy bull elephant sold well given media hype the last few years, current rates and problems with Zambia, Botswana, etc.

On the other hand I have heard from three very well known and established operators from western Canada in the last couple of days who said the show was poor and not at all as good as it has been in the past for bookings. All three said they usually get 12 to 16 actual bookings at DSC and this year they only got one or two. All three also said they thought the number of people was down........ but of course attendance numbers is pretty subjective and can appear very different depending on where ones booth is.

However I have known these operators for a lot of years and when they are talking to me I get the straight goods as they are not worried about the message they are conveying. And as they said, and I know all too well, DSC is not a cheap show to do as an exhibitor and is almost as expensive as SCI when the dust settles.

I know its been said here and other places several times, but the dates conflicting with the close of whitetail season in central Texas are an issue. I expect the folks who were going to go and book, went and booked, but many of the extra folks who are interested and might have booked after talking to outfitters were hunting.

My buddies from Argentina that stay with me had a great show. Thay also get a lot more business in the weeks following the show due to larger group bookings (checking with buddies, wives, etc.). They don't do SCI anymore, most of their business is from DSC, repeat, and word of mouth.

interesting question.

One that the Dallas S. C. should be asking everyone that set up a booth.

My friend that had a booth stated that he thought attendance was not as high as in the past but those in attendance were serious hunters and his bookings went well.

I am curious about Reno as well. From the sound of it; there are going to be a lot of people attending. I am curious how bookings go as well.

My first time to DSC and I think I am hooked. Don't mind SCI in Reno as the flight is cheap and quick for me. However the weather was much better in Dallas and I think I am hooked. Absolutely hated SCI last year in Vegas. Having the show on two floors was horrible to try and move between.

Hey Buzz , thanks for the post as I was really curious to see the outcome. That said I think your situation is not a true reflection of DSC as you have a awesome following on AR and the bigger hunting community , based on your uncompromising quality and style of safari. You were destined to have a better than average exhibitor result. Feed back to me has been a bunch of our regular Texas hunters were on ranch either hunting or as a owner also there with clients, our group of exhibitors who own and market together Tanzania , Mozambique , South Africa , Namibia and Botswana all could not attend due to dates conflicting with annual family vacation over festive season, I have also now heard from a bunch of guys who said the same. A very good friend based in Texas thought attendance and buying was down , his group of buddies are taking the wait to Reno stand before confirming. Of interest is the elephant situation , we expected a rush of bookings based on the closure of Botswana and the 400 trophy bulls coming off the market in 2013 , however there was great caution as I think many had heard of the closure promoted by The Hunting Report for 2013 , although there was an extension granted through to 2014. What did happen was a rush for cheaper hunts , the high end ones still open but the $35 000-00 range hunts are all sold up. The problem elephant bull hunts are also slow. The elephant hunt in the 70-85 pound range at $60 000-00 remains slow and there are still a few openings for the serious big tusker hunter. We have also found Leopard all but stopped , and all buffalo hunts sold up in Botswana but still many openings in Mozambique and Tanzania. Namibia and South Africa have been slow as well. We are looking forward to Reno and are well placed with 4 booths at 944 in the main isle. saf.bots@info.bw

Buzz - we had a great show in regards to Taxidermy. That typically means folks are booking hunts, but it did seem like many folks were having trophies land from last years hunting/bookings which boosts our business with coordinating projects. As far as DSC, they are the kindest hardest working organization for the exhibitors! Me and my Team are proud members of DSC and show sponsors. Thanks for the feed back all, and we'll see most of you at Reno... DAN

Graeme..it is my understanding the 400 trophy bulls will be on the market for 2013 and coming off in 2014? I believe I read a quote from Botswana officals that goes something like "elephant will be hunted on a case by case basis within the CITES framework"..It will be interesting to see what that means come 2014.

Hi that's correct there are still 400 bulls on quota for 2013 , all the existing concessions received the same quota as the year before and the special dispensation auction elephant received a slight increase. The future is still hazzy in that I attended a meeting with The Minister of Wildlife , who is also the brother of our President, his Excellency IAN KHAMA, in this meeting it was stated there would be no hunting in government concessions in the future 2014 onwards , however the words are moratorium not ban , there was no clarity on special dispensation elephants which fall into the problem elephant category.
In reality we never protected our industry from the anti brigade who infiltrated the inner circle of government , we were not vigilant. Hopefully the rest of africa will not sit back and think this will not happen to them , africa is a continent of change , it will happen and we should steer this change in the right direction.

So the future will be under the "special dispensation auction". I'll bet when it is all said and done there will be a "significant" number of these available form 2014 onward.

Alaska is very much the same way. We haven't slowed much if at all.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Geeze Buzzer, Ya think all those trophy bull pictures you posted this year might have something to do with your bookings. Looked like bloody Botswana. I for one expect quite a discount for Jane and my contribution. See you in Reno.
