Currently contemplating a hunt to RSA... As a young man, I used to have dreams of the giant trophy room full of dozens of shoulder mounts....but reality kicked in and it turns out that money actually DOESN'T grow on trees. Being on a budget, and also just not having the space for shoulder mounts, I intend to only get skull mounts of my trophies. So my question.....is there a substantial difference in price for only having the skulls prepared and shipped home? (as opposed to full dip & pack with skins) I'd much rather go back for a second hunt sooner, than to get everything shoulder mounted. _______________________________________________________ Hunt Report - South Africa 2022 Wade Abadie - Wild Shot Photography Website | Facebook | Instagram

My cousin's husband went last year and got his trophy shipment a week ago. $2600 from Joh-burg to Denver. For 15 skulls and 8 flat skins. Veterinarian level cleaned but not mounted skulls.

Wade, In the scenario you proposed I would just have the trophies done in RSA as European mounts ready to put on the wall. No plagues, no shoulder mounts and no skins unless maybe a zebra. You'd save a pile and when the crate comes you can just open it and hang your trophies. Mark MARK H. Howdy Wade, While the cost of shoulder mounts vs. Euro mounts will vary from taxidermist to taxidermist in RSA, Safari Specialty Importers can speak to the variables in shipping costs. Freight costs are based upon the volumetric weight of a crate, thus simple skulls and horns will generally be less expensive than hides and shoulder mounts. Safari Specialty Importers can guarantee that we can beat any written shipping quote from RSA to the US, and are the only import specialist that can provide an estimate of the total cost of shipping, clearing, and delivery of your trophies to their final destination. You can contact us at 845-943-5943 or info@safarispecialtyimporters.com so that we can discuss your importing needs. Wyatt Fetner

Experience and age and ever-inflating-price-gouging have led me to the belief that, unless a trophy is VERY special, do not bring it home. On my last two plains game hunts, the dip, pack and ship for only skulls and hides exceeded the amount I spent for the day-rate on 10-day hunts. Of the (approximately) $55,000 I've spent over the years on dip, pack, ship, and taxidermy, the only things I would have kept in retrospect are: my full mount leopard, full mount hyena, and elephant tusks. And now I'm of an age where I'm trying to figure out where these end up, since my kids have no interest in my stuffed animals, hides, horns, skulls, etc. Save your money to apply against your next hunt!

Wade, There will most certainly be a difference between having only the skulls cleaned, dipped and packed vs. having the skins dipped and packed as well as you (a) won’t incur the costs of having the skins treated in addition to the skulls and (b) shipping costs are calculated according to volumetric weight - ie. the smaller the crate, the less the shipping costs. Before any trophy part will be allowed to be imported into the US though, it has to undergo the disinfection (dip/pack) process. I work with Something Africa Taxidermy based here in my hometown - and we’ve developed an app that can calculate the estimated dip/pack and shipping costs at the click of a button. All you need to do is to email me your details (name, tel no and address where you plan on having your trophies shipped to and I’ll get an estimate on the dip/pack costs out to you as soon as I receive the details. The estimated shipping costs will be forwarded to you within 24 hours. Chris@ct-safaris.com

Not really interested in a cull hunt… I still want something to bring home, but don’t have the desire to spend $10k on taxidermy, nor do I have a place to put it all. _______________________________________________________ Hunt Report - South Africa 2022 Wade Abadie - Wild Shot Photography Website | Facebook | Instagram

I've done it all: dip & pack-taxidermy in the US, African mounts/finished skulls-tanned skins etc. It's not getting any cheaper, but careful who you deal with.
