I’m sorry to tell all of you but I’m leaving for Zim in twenty (YES 20) days to hunt Ele’s and Buff Big Grin.
There is a possibility we will be rained on in the afternoons! What to do with my ammo and my PH-88.
I will be bringing solids and soft’s. Question: I have thought about marking the back on the cases with a permanent marker (red for solid and black for softs). Does anyone have any other ideas as to telling the difference between the two bullet types? As for the water proofing the ammo I have thought about sealing the crimp and the primer with nail polish. Has anyone done this before or are there better ideas out there?
As for the guns: I plan on applying a coat of wax to the wood and keeping the metal coated with a gun oil… got any other ideas?

Please, please, please do a hunt report with lots of pics when you return.

I'm suffering from hunt report withdrawal.

Can't you just look at the bullets to see which ones are solids and which are softs?

I don't see an advantage to coloring the case head- you shouldn't be looking at it anyhow.

I put the solids on the right (front) and 1-2 softs on the left (back) of the ammo carrier with the double. I just figure if I need to reload in a hurry, its going to be time to use solids to sort out something ugly. The extra ammo is either in a day pack or at the truck besides the 10 rounds in the belt carrier.

When hunting eles you only need solids on U. If you are going toshoot animals of opportunity then get a second ammo carrier of your softs and wear them by your back pocket. If solids in rifle they will punch a good hole in any animal you shoot.

Good luck and enjoy your hunt.

I do mark any solids I take with a red marker pen on the primers.

I only use solids for elephants, and use softs for everything else.

The best protection for rain is SHOOTER's CHOICE RUST PREVENT.

Take your stock off, and spray the underside of the action as well as all other metals parts.

Johnson's Paste Wax. I bought a vest, solids on the right, softs on the left side; five of each plus the two I put in the rifle.

WOW good for you, and good luck on your hunt. Everybody has there own ways of doing things, as putting solids on this side or that side, vise versa. Just do what your you feel is right for you. Cheers.

I put this Renaissance Wax on both the metal and the wood and sometimes leather products.

John,
Best of luck to you. There is nothing like hunting elephant. It was a significant milestone in my life and I imagine it will be the same for you. Savor the experience.

Saeed:

So where the heck were you when I went to Zimbabwe (Chirisa) with my 375 in '93? Smiler I had sighted in and practiced almost entirely with softs. On arrival and having a drink with my outfitter in Harare he informed me that my PH would insist on solids for buff. (Fortunately I had anticipated the possibility and had also sighted in with solids -the difference in my Ruger African was only a few inches -but my PH made me sight in (over the hood (bonnet?) of a Toyota LandCruiser with solids. (I accused him later of really wanting to find out if I flinched)Smiler I used a solid on a buff at something between 30-35 yards. I hit him on the point of his shoulder and he lost all further interest in me. I'm a one time buff shooter (very regrettably) -but it did what my PH told me to do -"Break bones" (where buff are concerned) - so- in my longwinded way I think solids are as necessary on buff as on elephant -based on my one time experience.
