In your estimation, what would a wild mature adult male lion in good condition and health weigh alive? Would it be over 500 pounds?

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Its all over the place. From 425lbs - 525lbs on average. The two largest cats I have weighed personally were 489lbs & 503lbs. Definitely have a few smaller, and definitely have one bigger, that I was never able to weigh.

All the posts mentioning close to 500 or over are on the high end. Four PH's in Matetsi unit one came up with 200 to 210 kilos. They seemed to agree that was average for a six year old lion. That is about 400 to 440 lbs.

A lot depends on what is in the guts. If the animal has been feeding on a free bait for while, it could add 50 pounds to the figure.

Older books and field reports from the early / mid 20th century tended to average the adult male lion at 400 to 450 lbs & the adult male tiger from India at 450 to 500 lbs. I have read of Siberian tigers going 650 lbs! The tigers from Java & Sumatra were only about 300 lbs.

It also depends where...the lions comming out of the Kalahari are quite a bit smaller in body size than those comming out of the zambezi Valley.

I recon males in my area top at about 450lbs - assuming they haven't just eaten half a cow...Andre van Eeden shot the biggest male on record at our Natural History museum- mainless! but in it's prime. Over 600lbs. Come up from the valley and killing cattle. Had just killed a cow (but not started eating) when Andre shot it.

Easily tu2

I always find it puzzling why so many people are so keen on discussing cat weights for that very reason..... skull measurement is such a more accurate way to determining quality....
