Howdy,

I am not trying to start any hysteria, but a client came to my office today and we were talking about Safari hunting. He stated that in the past few weeks nothing is being shipped out of Zim in regards to hunter's trophies. Something about the banks aren't letting the expiditors have clearance to move them out. Is this true? and does anyone know how long it will last?
Much Thanks

It took a long time for me to get my trophies back from Zim not because of the government but just a screw up with the shipper. But the gov like everything in Zim moves slowly. My outfitter had a conection here in the US and I made all my payments with a personal check to him and everything was no problem we even prepaid a lot of trophy fees and it sure made it easy, no bank charges for wiring money overseas. Ask whoever set up the hunt for you if he has a US connection, They almost all do to avoid the rampant inflation rate in Zim, it makes life much easier. Have a good hunt.

My trophies from Zim arrived here in the states yesterday. They came out of Zim via South Africa within the last two or three weeks. The Zimbabwe Reserve Bank is as slow as Christmas for sure. They are a significant hold up.

This morning I received a quote from the freight company (my Zim taxidermist is using) to freight one European buffalo mount and one leather rifle case from Bulawayo to Sydney, Australia - all for $10054 USD collect, or $1000 prepaid! The instruction to the taxidermist was that these 2 items would be sent with my buddy's large consigment of trophies. My buddy received his freight quote of about $3700 USD, from the same company, to ship over a dozen trophies.

Since these instructions were given, the taxidermist and freight company have seen fit to charge me for one parcel that is supposed to weigh 56 kgs. I've since sent all parties an email telling them not to proceed, and that a friend in Bulawayo will collect my items. I'd prefer to give them to a mate than pay that sort of money.

Folks, please tell me whether I'm being too cheap, or it is reasonable to be offended for being charged $1K to send a 56kg parcel that is made up of one shield mount and a rifle bag?

At this moment I feel someone is trying to extort me! Jim

Spartan - That quote certainly seems high to me, but I'm not up on current shipping rates from Africa. If you ever get a detailed list of all the charges involved, you will see that numerous folks along the way all stick their hand in your pocket. Last time I shipped stuff home from RSA it cost me approx. $1,000 to get three skulls and horns (Impala, Kudu, Eland) to my house. I felt like I was being ripped off and will never let that happen again. Ever since then, it's been nothing but pictures for me.

Since I've run out of room in my house to hang any more trophies, I just use the $$ saved towards the next hunt.

My hunt was in September 2006; my trophies made it to the USA in June 2007. I haven't seen them yet so I don't know how the condition is but they are here finally. I used Maple Freight and Coppersmith.

It took 19 months (Dec 05-Aug 07) to get my skulls, backskins and a few curious sent from Zim via Taxidermy Enterprises. Talk about slow ! The shipment actually came from RSA, shipping only was $1200, plus TE's fees which were high also.

Cleared the shipment myself as usual here in Dallas.

I am waiting for completed trophies from last June, and have received word that all export paperwork is in order but crates haven't left yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Spartan,
You got robbed just like I did. I have a crate that is 82kgs and it is going to end up costing me $1700 when it is all over. There must have been at least 3 charges of around $250-$270 for documentation bullshit. Then while I was waiting for a sea freight quote they promised me that never came, they said I waited to long and shipped it any way with the brokerage handled by Coppersmith. I contacted DHL who did my shipment two years ago and they gave me a much better price. Said I could get the import documents switched to them but there is a transfer charge from Coppersmith. There has got to be a way to work this out before actual shipping time. They really have us in a hostage situation.
