Just thought you guys might like to see the picture of this Big Lion. Andrew Baldry (Fairgame on AR), was the PH. They shot it 3 days ago.

His message read - "The best I could do in 10 days, but you should have seen the huge leopard feeding on the bait too"!

Below is a photo of the Leopard that was also feeding on the lion bait!!! Andrew says he didn't seem to bothered by the lion.

Nope! But knowing the normal size of a lion skull in that area, I would be its between 24" - 25".

Lionhunter,

We shot trophy Hippo, Puku, and maybe a 16 inch Warthog as bait (which i have a photo of) but those animals are not what the hunt is about.

We shot a good Lion under quite extreme circumstances and that my friend is what hunting is about.

I doubt the skull will ever be measured by me or my client?

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Andrew, I notice you're holding your double in the photo. Does that have anything to do with the "extreme circumstances" you mentioned? Interesting follow-up, perhaps?

sandyhunter,

No follow up as the shot broke the spine. However this Lion destroyed two of our blinds and spent three nights in camp. The disruption was such that one night we had to go without dessert.

I was hunting along side one of Fred Duckworth's old time friends and PH and he remarked he had never seen such behaviour from a Lion.

We had two leopard feeding on bait both of them were brutes.

Will get Aaron to post some more photos.

The Leopard fed during the day and the Lion at night. This was one of the biggest Leopards I have ever seen and we all mistook him as a Lioness in the long grass?

Beautiful cats. After spending 10 nights and 9 days, with damned little sleep to take a lion,I swore I'd never do it again. Now, 10 months later I can barely resist jumping on some of this years bargains. What sweet misery. Jim

Aaron:

In my ignorance (on another thread)I insulted you about hunting lion over bait (and you were kind enough to respond as a gentleman to an old Irishman's temper) Looking at your second photo of a "young lion" reminded me of something I had totally forgotten. (My prejudice had been originally inspired because of a picture I took of a lion stand (Chirisa,Zim)It seemed to me that the lion had to be completely helpless which stretching up to the bait. Your photo of the "young lion" (he looked magnificent enough to me!) reminded me that the lion might also be on all fours around the bait and very alert for enemies. Many thanks for showing some pictures of an animal I admire enormously. (The first picture is dumbfounding - Did somebody comb out that mane before snapping the picture?)Smiler

Gerry,

This cat broke into the vacant blind twice. The second time we had gone in during the dark of early morning to find one of the chairs gone and a bloody great hole in the grass wall. It was quite an unnerving feeling sitting on the ground waiting for light not knowing if the Lion had seen us or not. He did not and I wonder what his reaction had been if he had?

You should try walking into a blind when it is dark and when one of the world's apex predators is tearing a big piece of meat to pieces.

Jeff, what's up brother?? Hey man, if we saw one like the lion pictured above, why in the heck wasn't I shooting it??? Guess you better re-fresh my memory, cause I don't recall passing one like that.

We did pass the first male when you were so conveniently throwing-up in the blind, and making all kinds of racket. Much to our amazement, the lion came strolling into the bait only 10 minutes later!! My poor girlfriend, had to sit right next to you through the whole thing, as did Richard. I'm surprised we all didn't start throwing up.

Then we passed the other lion, who was with that female which was missing a lower left leg. After you left, Richard and I passed another lion, but I sure don't remember one like that????

How's the new show going, I hope well???

I noticed that later, but the fact is Zambia is a great place to hunt no matter what part you hunt, and in my experience that wildlife is healthy just about everywhere, as long as the country is not under drought conditions, but especially along the rivers! tu2
