I was involved in self defense shooting hunting tuskless with Alan Shearing in Cheworwe South in '08. The charge developed in the blink of an eye and was over in 5 seconds. No threat displays, no mock charges, the cow just turned and came for us. I had to wait for Alan to shoot first, she was right on top of us. Alan had taken time beforehand to discuss different situations that might arise and how to handle them. It proved to be time well spent.

It is vital that you and your PH agree on ground rules in advance.Discuss different scenarios and how to handle them. I was fortunate in having a good Game Scout from Parks who backed up our story. It also helped having Shaun Buffee get the charge on video. It caused quite a stir when we went to the Mkanga field station to file our report, the warden was low key about it.

Since it was very clearly a self-defense shooting, there was no trophy fee. We were tasked with the recovery for Parks and it made for a long day

Bill C and MJines, as well as the others, have given you great advice. If you have done your homework beforehand you should be OK.

Hmmm I'll stir the pot stir

I have issues with shooting animals 'in self defense' when te carge is essentially provoked by the clients choice of weapon. I had it two years ago on a buff with bow and again earlier this year on an ele with a ML. ( and a couple of near runs previously) and ended up climbing a tree in a hurry on a buff with handgun hunt this year as well

In all thee cases, we had to get too close to the herd so that the client could shoot. In each case, an animal, other than the target one- charged.

If I pull the trigger digging the client out of the dwang because of his chosen hunting method, I firmly belive that the land owner is owed the trophy fee. If we were hunting with a rifle, none of those situations would ever have arisen.

he took considerable time to explain to me the difference between a mock and serious charge (that's the kind where they don't stop).

Smiler There you go. Shoot the ones that don't stop!

Like so many things in life, for me, the key in these situations is communication. I had a video clip posted on this site of a charge that we (Buzz Charlton and I) experienced in December. In the video clip two things are clear, (1) Buzz was communicating with me throughout, and (2) I was communicating with Buzz. This despite the fact that the whole event takes place in five to ten seconds. In the clip Buzz can clearly be heard telling me to stay with him. The worst thing that can happen in a situation like that is for everyone to be running in mulitple directions. It becomes impossible for the PH to try to maintain control of the situation. Also in the clip you can clearly hear me shouting to Buzz and asking if it is okay to shoot, to which Buzz replies, yes and then I fire, he fires and I fire again. From my perspective what this hightlights is that it is incumbent upon the PH and the hunter to do their best to communicate with one another, circumstances permitting. Not to say that will solve all problems, but it goes along way towards avoiding unintended consequences.

Good lord. Here comes the cow. You shoot it. Does it really have to be on paper first, notarized, and sealed with a kiss? Smiler
