Some of you may remember that the last time I reported on Jim, he had just left home, at the beginning of the year. Roger and Anne were in the states at the time, and he actually left home the day after Anne left. Coincidence? I don't think so - I know this guy too well now, and I know he is a very smart chap. Anyway, we were all most concerned about something happening to Jimmy when he left - you all know about the poaching problems we've had to deal with in recent times - and so we monitored his whereabouts on a daily basis. Whilst I was on Humani, I was seeing him on almost a daily basis, and the scouts were definitely seeing him every day. Whenever he sensed the scouts or me, he would blunder off through the bush, and I was glad about that, believing he had become a truly wild rhino overnight. None of us really realized the extent of Jimmy's love for Anne. Anne and Roger were away for some time, and when they returned, Anne instructed the gamescouts to locate Jim and not approach, but to radio her when they found him. This the scouts did, and soon Anne was cautiously approaching him in some thick bush not far from HQ. Jimmy was dozing and Anne stopped about twenty yards off. Then she began calling out softly 'Jimmy, hello Jimmy.' Her voice took a few seconds to register, but when it did, Jimmy went crazy with joy, pounding up to Anne who had to take evasive action. It ended up with Anne crawling out from between his legs, her glasses and Roger's binoculars shattered! Then Anne began to talk to and pet Jimmy, and quite naturally he followed her home for a feed. This animal will never cease to amaze me. It was great visiting Jim at Humani - he hadn't been home for a month but arrived on the day I did. What a bull! He is 2.5 years old now. Hope you enjoy the pictures. Dave

Ann, I believe you are right, he is smiling! You will not believe what a relaxed rhino he is - so chilled, no agro at all nowadays. Of course, nobody tries their luck and the only person who goes up to and touches him without a separating barrier is Anne. No matter how fond I am of him, I always keep in mind that he could kill me in seconds. I don't think he would, but I know he could, and so I talk to him from a distance or from behind a gate. He is pretty intimidating from close up, but as I have said, so chilled. Dave

Fantastic! Ann leads a charmed life. Lucky that just the glasses and the binos were damaged from Jimmy's enthusiasm at hearing Ann's voice. It's a long way from your first reports on Jimmy as a youngster. Hopefully he will live a long and fruitful life. It would be great if he could get himself a girlfriend and produce some little Jimmys!
