Here are some less obvious things:

1. Fieldline H20 Fanny Pack w 2 water bottles and space for gear incl a personal first aid kit (chapped lips, blisters, the runs, back spasms, migraine,iodine for dubious water); buddylok pouch on the belt for videocam on one side plus spare tapes and batteries; another buddylok on the other side for knife (benchmade folder) and flashlight.
2. A travel pillow so the flights are bearable.
3. Spare screwdriver bit set for my Leatherman Wave
4. Prescription shooting glasses
5. Charger for videocam that plugs into a cigarette lighter. There will always be a vehicle with a cigarette lighter.
6. Carrhart lined jacket and heavy canvas pants 2 pairs
7. Decaf teabags. (caffeine is a no no when you go over there, your sleep cycle is messed up as it is)
8. Some sachets of flavored hydration salts to add to the water in the waterbottles.
9. And my secret weapon ... a travel hammock (parachute material) that allows me to take a nap in comfort at lunch time under a tree someplace, or while waiting for the PAC elephant to show up at night.

A good .375, a good pair of boots and a wide brimmed hat... You can base the rest of your battery and gear around that Wink

i have a texas huntco belt - tough as a bad mother in law as they say - its got ammo , a boxcutter with spare blades a leatherman, a small digital camera and a tiny first aid /trauma kit with sutures and iodine.

Then hat, gun, binos and shoes is all i need -

as long as i have those things we are good to go there is a list of things that would be nice but these are the things that i consider bare essentials to me .

given the choice i always have a small backpack with good first aid , rehydration salts, water and some knives that the trackers carry. if you have that backpack you have all you need - the type of backpack depends on the sponsor of the moment fishing stir dancing

my strong recommendation is get a backpack and belt setup so if you have those two items you have all you need consolidated in one place - leave the truck in a hurry and as long as you have your pack , belt gun and hat you are good!

Good lad. about time some one bought up the .458WM

Plenty of woompo for anything feisty and as reliable as the White Cap. Touch wood.

For those who can't afford Krieghoff Teck, a FinnClassic 512 double rifle in 9.3 with a second set of 12 ga bbls will about cover the waterfront, for around $3K.

Available in blued finish, or engraved in various grades of finish including titanium vapor finish.

Mainstay? As in necessary? Malarone.

But besides that, I take three rifles and a truck load of gear.

None of it (except the Malarone) is really necessary.

Pretty much all you need is an accurate rifle of at least .375 caliber and plenty of game.

Ask a San bushman what's necessary. They don't even need Malarone. Cool

Some great suggestions on this thread.

My one contribution is to always take $100 in one-dollar bills. A wad of these in your pocket will allow for:
• Tipping the likes of hotel porters and airline baggage carriers;
• Picking up the occasional trinket or Coke at a local market;
• Providing a little something to a child or other in need;
• Giving something to hand over in the event of a robbery (without having to surrender a wallet, passport, etc.);
• Paying a car park boy to keep an eye on your vehicle while you shop; and,
Baksheesh - in the form of a 'cash penalty' - e.g., to that ticket agent in Zim threatening to charge you megabucks for a suitcase that's a pound over the 22 kilo limit.

When your back is to the wall, ten bucks in one dollar bills looks like more than it is and can often 'grease the skids'.

Oh, and one more thing: My iPad.

It's the size of a magazine yet contains 18 movies (including Buzz Charlton and Craig Boddington videos that psyche me up during the flight over) and 13 days of music and lectures; it provides WiFi access to the internet and email at airports and hotels; it has dozens of very cool stand-alone applications; there's a photo album with all of my previous safari photos so I can share them in camp; and it offers lots of battery life - far more than any laptop.

The iPad has become a much valued 'must-have' item when I travel.

One gun trip - .375 M70 in synthetic stock with 2 1/2 Pentax. Has worked on everything from Francolin to Elephant.

Two gun trip - .470 Kreigoff for big nasty things and the 9,3 Ruger #1 for everything else up to Eland.

And a lot of those little one-bottle lemonade mix packets. Big Grin

"Boiled Sweets"--another term for hard candy.
"Hard" candy is made from boiling sugar solutions with flavorings added to a supersatured solution.
When cooled in a candy mold you get a Hard piece of candy,think rock candy or Jolly Rancher type of candy.
Great to suck on to keep moisture in your mouth and get quick energy.
