What is your "go to" rifle/caliber for African hunting? What about other important equipment that you could not leave without?

Plain Jane. Pre 64 M70 in 375 with 1.5-5 Leupold and 1.5-6 Illuminated Kahles both in Talley QD mounts. The other essential is a set of 8X20 Zeiss binoculars. Some Desert boots and I'm ready to go.

A good 375, well worn boots, bug dope/sunscreen combo and a supply of Immodium. Really!

A .500 NE double and a good compact digital camera. A hat would be nice too, but not essential.

Depends on what you are hunting.

338 Win Mag. Ruger #1, plains game.

375 H&H. Ruger #1, bigger stuff.

Leica 10x40 binos.

Good walking boots/shoes.

Small digital camera.

Small daypack.

Plane ticket to Tanzania

I'm pretty sure that you guys have mentioned everything a guy 'needs'. Of course, if you have enough of that stuff Butchloc mentioned, you can also take a lot of stuff you don't need.

For me, my .338 for everything that isn't DG, and my .416 hoffman for DG. After that, well broken in shoes, my 30 year old Zeiss 8x32s, a nice camera and lots of time. Especially lots of time.

Rifle calibers have changed with the intent of the hunt. The mainstay of my packing list is a Tuff Pak.

I got to have it in my coffee. If you ever get to a safari camp and there's a jumbo box of the pink packets, I likely preceded you in camp.

Besides the $$$$$$$$$$$? For buff or elephant, my 500 Jeff or 450 NE or maybe even my 425 WR or 404.....these are serious decisions. For leopard or lion, my 375 FL double....since I'm selling my 450/400!!

I have a short list of things not to miss taking on safari.

The lists consists of two parts.

Part one is called MUST HAVE!

This is basically, passport, air ticket, wallet, 375/404 and ammo, pocket camera and Walter!

The second part is called NICE TO HAVE!

This includes laptop computer, an additional SLR and extra lenses, chewing gum, boiled sweets, insect repellent, sunscreen.

But Saeed, you must remember that those first three items on your 'Nice To Have' list (laptop, SLR and lenses) have become 'Must Have' items for the rest of us on your safaris!

Caliber would be .416, don't know which flavor.

Aslo, based on my careful review of Saeed's videos and photos, I would say the most critical thing to bring on Safari are some good friends!

The only thing that bothers is me is where in the heck am I going to find a Walter?

Usually a 9.3x62 calibre rifle, 8x30 Leicas, wide brim hat and a pair of Courteney boots (Boots because I prefer walking ).

Most things have already been mentioned.

I would add Cuban cigars, a GPS, and an excellent small flashlight.

Lastly and most importanty



Real coffee and Coffemate and if necessary a small coffee machine.

I agree with JohnDL. A small flash light or head lamp is good to have. I have a black diamond headlamp I got online at REI.com that works great.

That is funny, i bring it too along with my power creamer. Everyone in camp is drinking it by the time I leave.

My 416 is packed first.

my russell ph's, some .375 H&H barnes handloads and some leica 8x42s.

I have a weary old M-70 Classic stainless in .375H&H that has been with me on every trip I've ever done to Africa.

This one..



It is always accompanied by a heavy if going for DG or a .30 cal of some kind if hunting PG usually a .308 or a .30-06.

The .375....With a few of it's victories on the Dark Continent.








Usually this .470 if going heavy.



The .470 with some of it's better moments.







In addition I carry bug dope, a digital camera, a pair of Courtney's and some Cipro. A pair of shorts a pair of pants two shirts a small rifle repair kit a small knife, a pair of Lieca 8X32 Ultravids and some king of sun hat.

I'll bring an open-sight 458 lott,compact binoculars,trail running shoes,hat,rifle maintenance kit,camera and video.

A wide open mind and .375 H&H that works well. The rest is optional.

Personally I would leave the table behind unless of course you can afford the excess baggage.

Well, the table would be good for skinning out your smaller game. I'd bring it!

Another thing I wish I had said. It could not be more true. You can easily ruin your own safari regasrdless of what the safari operator does by not having a "flexible and positive attitude".
