It seems everyone is having a great time with the picture sharing so why not some Waterbuck? I took this one on the same hunt at Melorani, RSA in 2004 that I took the Nyala. Both horns are over 31" and scores 83 1/8 SCI and ranks #3 with a bow. Another one of MY "Top five alltime" with a bow. Waterbuck are definitly at the top of my list for African plainsgame. Here's mine from 2001, taken with a .30-06, one shot front on. When shot he ran off like he wasn't hit and no one was confident I actually did make a hit on him. We waited a bit and began our search through some very thick and tangled brush. He was eventually found by scent once we got downwind. ~Ann

This one just made it into Rowland Ward. Jaco Human (he's the bearded Afrikaaner reeling over on the right side of the picture) needed to hold onto the horns to keep upright. I think it was the emotion of his first Rowland Ward trophy for a client. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I enjoy hunting waterbuck and have taken three over the years... two in South Africa and one in Zim. All but the first taken with the .375 H&H. My first fell to a Sako in 7mm Remington Magnum shooting 175 grain Swift A-Frames. On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. I was thinking the same thing about the defassa- what a cool color. Is that typical color for a defassa. Len Hawkins

Thanks, Len and Larry. I don't know about the overall color, but the ring on their behind is different. I think defassas are solid white back there. I'm sure some other guys here can compare the two better than I can.

A good rule of thumb on Waterbuck: Common Waterbuck can vary in color, especially their facial color. When looking at a common from the rear, they look like they just sat down on a fresh painted toilet seat. Thus the "toilet seat" ring around their rear. Very impressive bulls you guys and Ann posted! Congrats on taking exceptional trophies. Watebuck taken in the Gwayi Vally 1998. Went about 29. Hard to tell cause the tips are in the shadows. Sot with a BLR in 358 win. Oh my god...a lever action with a deatchbale magazine...that's blasphemous and its a short action round also...heaven for bid Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

This one was taken in '04 not terribly far from Lake Kariba. This picture is currently my background photo on my home office computer. Those trackers were a ton of fun to hunt with. I hope with another 30 years of hunting under my belt I can learn half as much as any one of those guys. Kyler

The following is the Defassa Waterbuck I took in Tanz in 2005: This was a hell of a stalk followed by a shot of 225yards. Getting to the animal over the reeds was an adventure in itself. Kudude
