This on behalf of a friend who is purchasing a parker-hale in 30-06 for his 10 year old son. The thing is is that it has a 21 inch barrel. Is that enough?

The "standard" length for non-magnum cartridges is 22". There will be no real disadvantage having a 21" barrel, and because it will be used by a smaller shooter it would be preferable to a 22". IMO Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

If the price is right then a 21-inch barrel .30-06 is fine for a 10-year old. Here's a pic of my then 11-year old with his Remington Model Seven .308 Win with an 18 1/2 inch barrel. He's on the small side but he did just fine with it using Hornady Light Magnums. .

It’s way more than enough. Both my boys have hunted from a young age. By the time they were 10, both used a 7 x 57. Best thing you’re buddy can do is to download the ammo to 2200 fps or less. This reduces perceived recoil significantly, while giving a very useful trajectory out to 150 m.
