On this last trip, the TSA lock on my guncase was missing when it arrived at HRE. Fortunately nothing missing (nothing of value except rifles in there). My friend's lock was also cut off his duffel ... stole a daypack with knife, headlamp etc.

Obviously, the baggage handlers at JNB now have bolt cutters (and NO supervision). So there is absolutely no way to avoid getting ripped off at JNB. The World Cup is going to be an interesting event. Fly another route. If you must fly JNB, buy baggage insurance and have receipts/photos of all your contents.

Last summer I lost a new pair of Nikes, a knife and a bag of life savers candy from my bag at JNB. I sure did miss those life savers.

Hey, never underestimate the power of a rubber snake in a hunting camp....... I've had no end of fun with 'em over the years.

you can play all the more usual tricks on the staff, clients and any other bugger that wanders into camp and even better, you can take a piece of fishing line, tie one end to the smake and the other end to a piece of fruit or a doughnut, hide the snake in a plastic bag and put it outside for the monkeys to find. Wink

A good rubber snake is always gonna be fun! rotflmo

Steve, to hell with a rubber snake. My next trip will include a complete hornets nest within a white garbage bag with the words "DO not drop-valuable jewelry and gifts inside" written in black magic marker. I dare those jackasses to open that bag.... Big Grin

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Yep.. I was the sap that had a 100$ Northface backpack, a really nice headlamp, and a few knives stole from me on this last trip with Russ..bastards cut the lock off my duffel and helped themselves to whatever they felt like.

And while NOTHING is truely safe while traveling through this shithole, next year I'll just go that extra step and have them vaccum seal my check-in bag with that saran wrap stuff.. still not foolproof by anymeans, but it may deter them from wanting anything from my bag when there is an easier one 2 feet away.

I cannot stand JNB..

We will have to go through JB next August on our way to Moz. We will overnight there so the baggage shouldn't be in those sleazy handlers possesion for too long. Somebody on another thread suggested using plastic tie wraps in addition to your locks on outside pockets of luggage. The thought being somebody would have to take/have the time to defeat two systems instead of just breaking or unlocking the lock. You would also be able to immediately tell if someone had unlocked the locks and opened the bag if the ties were missing. This might alert you to proceed to the claims area before leaving the airport and not discovering the loss until you arrived in camp.

Nothing will be foolproof, but you would think SAA would insist on RSA doing a better job of baggage security at their major point of entry to their Country.

Would they be able to tinker with the original Tuff Pack lock as easily. Couldn't use bolt cutters on them.

Is there a way of bringing this to the attention of some of the big players, like the airlines, SCI, PHASA, South African Tourism Board, etc. to get them to clamp down on these rotten, no-good, worthless bastards?

The problem is going to take money and incorruptible people to solve. Who is going to provide each?

I think Use Enough Gun has a good idea. We all should contact every travel agent we know and let them know the shit that goes on in JNB. Travel agents that do not regularly send clients to SA may not be aware of how much stuff is stolen by these clowns. The SA government has spent millions in anticipation of the World Cup. If enough bad press and complaints are forwarded to the SA Tourism Board something may be done. I think that maybe the only way to handle this problem is the threat to hit the government in the pocket book.

here is a link to a supplier. They are made by Joe Morgan in NC. He has lots of reptile replicas available. This is the 29'' puff adder. It must be finished, eyes installed and painted. Feel free to PM or email me with questions.

The only way to improve the situation is to get rid of the thieves, but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon and will probably never happen.

The best thing you can do is make your cases as secure as possible by fitting them with good locks etc and even then, all that might do is make the thief decide it's too much trouble to open your case and go to something easier. Plastic wrapping the bags is also another good deterrent.

Then all you can do is photograph and list the contents and make very sure indeed you have a good, no quibble insurance policy. Whatever you do, don't rely on the airline compensating you, because they'll always have a get out clause. Also, if you do have something stolen, be very sure you report it to the police and get a crime report number.

There are a few plastic wrapping machines jut before check in at JIA, however, you can't wrap firearms or ammo, but they're at less risk because there's a separate handling system for those items.
