Cost of shipping skulls ONLY back from RSA

What is the approximate cost of shipping only skulls back from a hunt in RSA?

I am leaning heavily towards doing this for my hunt that is tentatively happening in 2019. I just cannot stomach the cost of taxidermy when it will be as much or more than the hunt itself. I plan to shoot 12-15 animals and have only skulls shipped back. Is there any difference in cost of shipping ONLY skulls vs. shipping skulls and capes back?

Also, what condition do skulls typically arrive in, and what is the most cost effective way of getting the skulls cleaned up for display?

To be fair....I am also contemplating having one or two animals shoulder mounted (namely a Kudu and something else) and the rest euro mounted.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Question 1: Costs will vary greatly.
Question 2: Not much difference as capes weigh little and fold-up pretty compact. You will/may save on dipping.
Question 3: Skulls usually arrive free of meat but will be yellow and need cleaning unless you specify otherwise.
Question 4: Cheapest to clean them yourself. Second most economical option would be to have them cleaned for display in RSA.

Just my opinion, a kudu euromount is one of the most striking displays of a trophy. It really highlights the beauty and symmetry of the horns/skull.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

If you are going to ship 15 skulls home, the cost isn't going to be much more for the capes too.

You may want shoulder mounts eventually. Especially if you shoot a zebra, euro mount zebra isn't very exciting.

I have also thought about having all the hides tanned and then keeping them vacuum sealed in a deep freezer for possible future mounting.

Hi Wade,
What part of South Africa are you hunting? If the northern part, Life Form Taxidermy is excellent.
If the southern part, Spirit of Africa is excellent also. Shipping just skulls and capes is much more reasonable than mounted heads. Spirit of Africa was less expensive, but the work was every bit as good as others. The last ones I had done were ready to mount on a plaque or just hang on the wall as you wish. Clean and bleached, ready to use, no other preparation necessary. The tanning was first rate also.

I will most likely be hunting in the Eastern Cape.

The actual shipping for my box of two skulls, capes and horns from RSA to California was $300.

The Dip and Pack fees vary a huge amount so shop carefully in RSA and you also have to figure in Customs clearance if it's not here your home. (I'm over 100 miles from an Intl. airport)

In the Eastern Cape I've used Paul smith with Relive Africa Taxidermy, excellent work and reasonable. I usually ship skulls only but have had a couple of shoulder mounts done as well, well packed and arrived in good shape. Shipping cost vary a good bit, the last crate I received from Paul cost me about $950.00 from PE to DFW.

Paul does great work and his prices are reasonable. A lot of the taxidermists in the Eastern Cape all use the same shipping company and shipping should be roughly the same for all of them.

Wade,

We hunted the Cape in three locations in '15. We used African Wildlife Artistry. They were prompt, efficient and far less expensive than some of the quote that have floated around this site. I had a combo of mounted trophies, capes and horns and European mounts. All arrived in great shape.

One word of advise if you are going to have Europeans done. Stress with the PH that great care needs to be taken when handling the skulls so as not to damage the nasal bones which break easily.

I hunted Apr 15, 2017. Had 29 pound box shipped back with Impala skull and hors plus Nyala skull and horn. Did my own importing into D/FW . Sent two wire transfer to RSA for total $500 plus and paid Delta cargo $50 here. All was packed great with plenty bubble wrap and proper wood box .

You can borrow money but you can not borrow time. Go hunting with your family.

My last trip was nine years ago, so my cost won't help you. As others have said, it varies. I would consider adding the small cost of tanning the hides, as they make for great decoration or rugs. For example, I've got a blesbok hide thrown over the back of my sofa. I did a pedestal on my gemsbok and had a custom mesquite pedestal made and used parts of the back skin to be panels bordered by mounding on each side of the pedestal.

Wade; Varies greatly, from dip & pack/crating to shippers and importers. You can do the paperwork yourself but make sure you understand the forms. Mistakes will cost you. I've done this for years; have trophies at the taxidermist, tannery, dip & pack, en-route, about to be en-route etc. Too much to type. Call me and have pen and paper handy.
