Hunted with Brent of HHK in the Omay and took a couple little PAC bulls.

Hunted with Buzz Charlton in Chewore and took a couple tuskless cows.

Both Brent and Buzz are first class guys and loved hunting with them. Shaun was the videographer on the hunt with Buzz, and had cojones of steel to stand to the charge. But all these guys are freaking crazy.

Here is a pic of a tuskless elephant cow that charged from 15 yards. Luckily I dropped her at 15 feet. Pic was taken from where I was when she dropped in the thick jess bush. Close, eh?

I'm glad you had such a successful trip.

I'll agree with you that Brent Hein is top notch as a P.H. I hope to be hunting with him again in March.

BTW, did Brent tell you about the baboon capture at Lake Kariba?

Welcome back!

Charging cow eles in the doghair thick jess of the Zambezi Valley? That's what I call heartstopping, jolts of adrenaline FUN! Congrats Will...can't wait to see Sean's video of it. Amazing how he stands in there, filming the whole time...he is a trusting young soul.

Ataboy Bill! thumb

That's a great picture.

I was with Shaun when he filmed his 1st ele hunt, he did good, but it sounds like he came a long way since then. Didn't he just shoot a big bull in Moz? Anyway, congratulations on the ele's (especially the charging one!). Bill

Will, the jess is so thick in that picture, there are just enough strategically placed twigs, that you damn near look good!

Good shooting and just in time! More details, please!

Bill,

Good to hear that your trip was successful, and I hope you enjoyed Chewore North as much as I did. I think you stayed at their flycamp up in the mountains? It's a hilly area, as is most of CN, and scenically beautiful.

Hope you'll fill us in more when you get the time! (I have to admit that I myself still have to post a report from CN, and will do so soon when I return home...) Smiler

I thought we had the honor of having Shaun on his first hunt. We used him in Dande North last season, and his videography was both excellent and infuriating. He took beautiful panoramic shots, great dialog shots. Then, when it came time to take the trophy, he’d film for the first 3-4 seconds after the shot, then turn off the camera. My hunting partner and I were both a little disappointed when the video missed our follow-up shots.

Glad to hear he’s improved. I love the service, was sure better than trying to film each-other for 10 days, just a little frustrated in some of the details.

Congratulations, Will, on a fine hunt. Looks like a spectacular time was had by all.

FF: I hunted with Buzz in April-04, and actually took along the Canon GL2 video camera and helped figure out all the bells and whistles. I've seen some of Shawn's more recent work from two different hunts, and his skills have indeed improved. And I THINK Buzz still only charges $100/day if I'm not mistaken, which I THINK includes the daily rate charged by the concession holder. As I had my two sons along this past trip in July and the group was already large, I didn't get the hunt filmed.

I don't want to steal Will's thunder (WILL SHOT A CHARGING ELEPHANT AFTERALL!!! Big Grin), so I'll do another thread w/a link [again] to the two short video clips from last year. Regards, Bill

Arjun,

Good to hear from you. Folks, this guy is the luckiest hunter I ever saw. Killed all his critters within minutes of leaving camp. Maybe it was the magic of having recently bought that original Mauser .404 Jeffery.

Canuck,

Yeah, you're gointg to have to buy my book Wink, which hopefully will be out by the time SCI rolls around in Reno in January. But I will tell you the 416 Taylor did admirable work.

And to tempt you even more, I have a good story of a guy that got whacked by a buff this year and lived to tell the tale (to me anyway!). Smiler

Just to mess with you. Cool

Okay, here is one more photo, of a tuskless cow taken with a frontal brain shot at about thirty yards using a 416 Taylor and a 400 gr. Speer AGS solid.

The "team": Shaun Buffee (videographer), trackers Tino and Criton, some ugly guy with no shirt sleeves, the game scout, and Royal. And a good time was had by all. Smiler

Nice pic, Will.

Don't get me wrong. I'm just jealous of your brilliant photographic techniques.

And I don't care how many of these you post, or how much you tell. I'll still be first in line to buy that book of yours!

Canuck,

I do not know what you want me to tell you. Sometime back I posted a pic of the then new 416 I pasted together: A CZ 550 that started out as a 7 mm Rem. Mag., a 22" Douglas barrel, and a McMillan AHR stock. I can get a few more ft/s out of RL-15 tha I can with IMR 4320.

At home, I get a foot or two over 2400 ft/s with "XX" grains of RL-15 in the rifle. The 400 gr. Speer solids stick out of the case too far to crimp them but it doesn't matter as the throat is long enough to accept them and the bullets aren't going anywhere as the packed-in-powder prevents them from being forced into the case.

Accuracy: I don't know. I'm only using open sights and only shoot at the range offhand at 25 yards. The bullet goes where I am pointing it, so it is "sighted-in!" and accurate enough. Smiler When in the presence of elephants at mere feet, I am much more concerned about whether the damn thing is going to go bang than it's accuracy at 100 or 200 yards!

On the charging cow, the bullet went through the skull, passed down along the spine and finally stopped in the right lung. Some penetration, huh? And it wasn't even a flatnose bullet! Smiler

Now that's the stuff. So I take it you are pretty pleased with your little-416?

One thing I forgot about it is what the final weight was?

Canuck

Will,
If a frontal head shot ends up in the lungs is that good in your opinnion? I am assuming it passed through the brain and went under the spine and then into the lungs...explain please..

I normally would expect the bullet to pass through the brain and into or below the spine and continue a straight course of about 3 or 4 inches and stop, but that would be on a large bull, so that has to be a consideration but it seems to me like the bullet veered severly of course..

Maybe you do need to try a Flat Point!! clap

Ray,

Maybe Will was standing above the cow which would account for the bullet travelling downward. Or perhaps the bullet deviated a bit, which is not unreasonable after passing through a whole elephant skull.

Bill said the cow was charging and I assume he meant a full out charge. If so the head is held very low and I can easily see the bullet traveling through the brain and then going below the neck bone or if at a slight angle missing the spine to the side and ending up in the lungs.
