Your advice needed! Lion hunt in Tuli/Zim

Hi All,

Facts:
Some friends of mine (2 hunters) booked a hunt supposedly for 2 lions and 1 leopard, 21 days in Tuli, Zimbabwe. The hunt is booked with Theo de Marillac! Who they met at the Harrisburg show in PA.

Your advice needed on:
1. Does anyone know who has the actual concession rights to Tuli in Zim? From my little research it seems Theo is a South African, PH, so not sure how he is conducting this hunt in Zim! I assume there is a Zim, PH involved! What do you think about the choice of outfitter?

2. Is Tuli a good place for lion and leopard? What would you say are the chances of shooting two lions in 21 days!

3. I am also wondering how there is a quota for 2 lions, I thought those were few and far between and fairly booked up in advance!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for all your frank thoughts, advice and suggestions.

Hunts in Zim conducted by non-Zimbabweans are a problem.

While there may be a Tuli in Zim, the Tuli block is in Botswana. I know a couple of Ph's that used to hunt on a ranch there. In fact, one guided Jim Zumbo at that ranch on a hunt filmed for TV.

I know nothing about this guy or his company.

I would be really careful.

All of my Zim Outfitters/PH's are already booked solid for this entire year on Leopard and Lion. We're just starting to book tentative dates for 2008 on Leopard. Further inquests would be in order. LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Use the "FIND" feature and do a search for "de Marillac". You will find plenty of information on the PH.

It is my understanding that only a PH licensed in Zim (who has to be a resident of Zim to get the license) can conduct hunts there.

Even if he uses a Zim licensed PH, from the past discussions regarding hunts on seized properties, there is a risk that one may unwittingly be deemed to be transacting business with an owner of the land who is on the US State Department's barred list. If that happens, the failure to get trophies back will be the least of their worries.

I am sure some of our members from Africa will add some flavor to this discussion.

I think someone is getting their Tulis cunfused..... There's the Tuli BLOCK in Botswana which borders RSA and there's the Tuli CIRCLE which belongs to Zimbabwe.

It might be the THULI SAFARI AREA of Zimbabwe near the Shashe river bordering Bots.
It may also be the communal land adjacent.
And one must be careful that they are free range hunts or not.

Tuli Circle is a Zim Parks concession (that juts out into Botswana). It is leased to Thandi Nkomo.

I belive that the operator who has the management contract may have changed - for the better.

If it is through the same outfit as last year... thumbdown

I don't know anything about the current situation but I can tell you I hunted plains game with Theo in RSA - Sept. 2001. He was an excellent host and I took some really nice animals. Our return flight was September 11 so we were stuck in Johannesburg for four days. Theo offered to bring us back to camp to wait it out - no charge. We declined because we wanted to be at the airport each day to catch the first flight to the US. Theo then drove all the way to Johannesburg, checked on us, took us around and to dinner and repeated his offer to host us in Rubbervale.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Smiler
