Right People To Hunt With In Zim

Lets make it simple for everyone.

Who are the right people to hunt with in Zim - by right - you will get a fair ethical hunt with and outfitters you can trust will be fair honest and ethical in their financial dealing.

I will start by saying Leon DuPlessis and Mike Payne with Save Safaris. I have a hunt report or two with them posted on AR.

Anyone else can add to this thread and hopefully provide other AR members with a road map to addressing the main ethical issue in hunting Zim - choosing the right outfitter.

True but most people will not stick their necks out to say something negative about someone even though it would help AR community as a whole.

Plus scumbags like Arnold Payne have dragged people into frivolous litigation.

AR does a great job in providing consumer information for a high dollar discretionary activity than has no residual value. Best way to know something is to hear it from people who have paid real dollars to go hunt and get their reference. I always trust real consumers more than paid celebrity experts or someone trying to sell a service or a product.

So it easier just to provide a reference for the good guys especially AR members who have been here a while and have hunt reports.

In my experience Mokore Safaris, Zambezi Hunters, Pro Safaris, Klipkraal Travel and Safari have been and continue to be excellent.

Lots of good operators in Zim . . . CMS, Mokore, Thierry LaBat, Chifuti, Pete Barnard (Bvekenya Safaris), Brent Hein, Martin Pieters, John Sharp, Shawn Buffee, and those are just ones that immediately come to mind.

Stay away from Evans M'kanza. He was in Kariba and kept my tip money and the trophy fee and it was a long two years to make things right. He's only the second generation in his family to be walking upright since they slithered out of the slime. Others have had trouble with this POS.
I agree, most Zim PHs are fine gents.

I've always been happy with Lou Hallamore. He's no longer booking through HHK Safaris (with who I've had a half-dozen good hunts, btw). He can be contacted through www.hallamorehunt.com

I'd imagine that he's had as many days in the bush (especially with his time with both RLI and RAR).

I'll be on my 8th safari with him in April (another tuskless) ... and we get to fish Lake Kariba for tiger fish, too...

Whoopee!

Nigel Theisen who is now a full-time PH for the Bubye Valley Conservancy. Which leads to the fact the BVC is a great conservancy and anyone allowed to PH there is OK.

Nigel also books a few hunts with Nengasha Safaris which leads to Paul Bennie who is owner/outfitter of Nengasha and also a PH. Paul is a good guy.

This is great - you go thru this list and you see experienced hunters/AR members who have spent real dollars telling you who the good ethical guys in Zim are. I bet in just the response to this thread the posters have spent millions of their dollars in the aggregate hunting in Zimbabwe.

Zim has a very developed high quality hunting industry. It operates in the land of Uncle Bob and is probably doing as much for conservation as anyone in Zim by just staying in business. It is a commercial and professional industry - end of day behind all hunting marketing conservation ect it is a business which is fine - actually it is great.

It attracts a few bad apples and that is what we as consumers need to stay away from. I also think that there are some very informed hunters who have low ethical and legal standards who are attracted to the bad apples - booking questionable hunts on seized land, hunting in national parks ect. Little can be done ny good ethical consumers to stop that other than not hunting with them and using our US based organizations to prevent the bad apples from advertising.

When some well respected Zim ph comes on AR and asks who xyz is - that is a very nice way of saying stay away from xyz.

None of these ethical legal and media frenzy driven anti hunting stories and events would occurs with the good operators. It is real wild animal hunting that is not a controlled event - there is a degree of uncertainty - why we have failed hunts, accidents, lost injured animals ect. But one would not see hunting on seized lands, throwing away of a collar ect that created the whole Cecil drama and a black eye for hunters.

So if one decides to hunt Zim - which I think is a great hunting destination. Hunt with the good guys.

Mike

Thierry Labat for sure.

I've hunted with him five times and sitting in Joburg now on my way to the 6th with a 7th coming in January albeit that one is in Cameroon.

Lots of good guys in Zim but Thierry is at the top in my opinion.

Good thread for somebody researching a hunt.

Exactly.

There are certainly some bad apples in the Zimbabwe hunting industry - some have been called out here, and those are the ones to avoid.

My suggestion is to discuss your hunt with whoever you wish to hunt with, and before sending the deposit, ask about them here.

My Zim experience is with CMS and Mokore, and I'm repeat business for very good reasons.
I had good experience with Jumbo Moore back when he had Arda in the Save, but I don't think he operates in Zim any longer.

I, like JudgeG had 3 good safaris with HHK. In fact if you looked at my posts around 2003 or so you would see that if asked, I would reply that there was only one damn good one in my experience and that was HHK. That all changed with my last safari in 2010 with HHK. It will and is my last safari with HHK. The whole safari was a pretty shabby experience. There are a helleva lot better operators in Zimbabwe.

In my research, really liked Mokore as well.

Use one of the top agents that you see post here a lot. Then, check them out.
Mark Young is a good guy.
Jeff Neal and Greg Brownlee are good.
Tim Herald works with a good outfit.
Wendell Reicht is solid.

There are many here. You pay no more for using an agent. I work with one nearly every hunt.

I have only done one safari to Zim, so - take this for what it's worth. I booked in Chewore South with Chifuti through Safari Classics. Everything went like clockwork and couldn't have been better, or easier from my end. I like paying the agent in the US - just in case!

In regards to HHK, there is a reason why the likes of the Hallimores & other "good-guys" quit the company. Yes, PH wages are kept low but not the only reason.

Graham Hingeston has a lot to answer for to those who have known and followed the areas they have managed. I use the term manage loosely.

Couldn't agree more. Martin Pieters runs a decent operation as well.

I have hunted with:
Zayne Van der Merwe (retired to farming)
Martin Pieters
Shaun Buffee
Lindon Stanton
Neil Duckworth (Twice)

They all epitomized what I expect a PH to be and can recommend each one.

What I avoid:

Anything with PAC in it.
Anything in the Gwaii River Valley.
Anything in a National Park, Robbins Camp seems to be a favorite.
Just about anything with an operator not from Zim unless it is with one of the guys on this thread.
