I need the wisdom of the AR board. Here is my "need". I want to take my family on a trip. I have a non-hunting wife and two hunting sons in their late teens. We are experienced in the US and have hunted RSA. We want to hunt buffalo, one or two leopards, possibly elephant and whatever plainsgame is available.

The goals of the trip are - 1) Fun with like minded PH's, inches are not important, 2) experience the hunt in a remote type area, 3) if possible, some local flavor for my non-hunting wife (villages, ruins, whatever), 4) would prefer a camp on a river or somewhere animals come to water and can be seen.

Budget is available to do this. We have no country preference other than outside of RSA as we have been there.

We are easy going and like to have fun...

What would you recommend???

Vinny, I can hook you up in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Namibia or Mozambique. I'll put some details together and PM them to you.
Good hunting,
David

I'm not nearly as well traveled as some guys here, but it sounds like Tanzania would be a great fit if you didn't mind the prices. Lots of touristy stuff and a relatively safe place. Botsana would likely fit everything except maybe the tourist thing. Maybe other members can recommend a company location combo in these countries.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

I agree. Tanzania is a great place, if the budget allows.

The Selous comes to mind for Elephant and Leopard. To get two Leopard you are on a 2x2 hunt, but, you also get two Lions too.

Zimbabwe is a possibility as well. Elephant are plentiful there as are Leopard and Buffalo.

Zambia is a great choice if you take Elephant out of the mix.

There are many optoins to consider. I have PM'd you some ideas.

US citizens can't import ivory from Zambia and Mozambique otherwise Nyassa area Mozambique might work.

Caprivi in Namibia would do elephant and buffalo and then you could go to a ranch for leopard plains game. I hear Vaughn Fultons name alot for Caprivi and ranch hunts so I would put him on your short list if Namibia is an option.

Vinny,

For elephant/leopard/buffalo/plains game I think Zimbabwe and Tanzania offer you the most realistic opportunity to take all these species on one safari with you all hunting from one camp on the water.

The major differences between the hunts is price with Tanzania being substantially more expensive.

In either case you stand a very good chance of taking 2 leopards, 2 elephant and multiple buffalo plus plains game on a 21 day booking. With 2 PH's you should all be kept busy.

In either case to hunt in a very wild area that supports good populations of the game you require there is going to be little for your wife to do unless she comes along on the hunts. I highly recommend hunters bring their spouses on safari but if they are not interested in the wilderness and the hunt they may not be happy. One option is for your wife to join you for the last few days of your safari and then for you all to do some touring.

If you'd like to discuss any of this further please call or e-mail me anytime.

My vote is for Botswana. Hunting is excellent with the big stuff in the Delta, great plains game on a ranch in the Kalahari, and you can’t beat Botswana for the touristy side to make the wife happy. I’ll send you a pm with more details.

I think Botswana announced that they were closing Leopard hunting beginning in 2009, but I may be wrong. I am sure someone here knows for certain.

Edit: Here's the Botswana Leopard thread.
