Todd, Did you your first shot find the brain? It looks like he was stone cold dead when he went down.

We think it did. It was just above the arch and he didn't move from his tracks. The second shot was for insurance. He fell in his tracks but it didn't appear to be the typical "rear legs first" event so Blake had me fire the second round just to be sure. Better safe than sorry type of thing.

Great video and awesome hunt. What was the length of time from getting on the island and making the shot? I'll be elephant hunting with Buzz in May (first time) but I'm not sure I'm looking for that much excitement.

I think about an hour from the time we in until the shot. You'll have a great hunt with Buzz's outfit. They are top notch! Jeff, you are coming to DSC right? SCI? We'll meet up and speak with Ken. Really an identical rifle to Larry's. We can probably arrange for you to shoot that gun a bit if you're so inclined!

Outstanding video Todd My God that terrain is dense! I can see now why the fitness program was required and you already have a head start on me for 2015 Sorry if you have already answered this but why the North Fork solids instead of the CEBs?
|
One of Us |
Mark, the NF bullets just shot a bit better groups with the 570gr solids than the CEBs in this particular rifle. For an expanding bullet however, I'm still using the 475gr CEB at 2415fps. We should have a lot cooler temps on our 2015 hunt! Very much looking forward to that one! See you in Vegas my friend!

Todd, I enjoyed the video although it would have been nice to see some close ups of the downed bull. From your description of the bull's reaction to your initial shot, the bullet may have passed close to the brain or hit a non-essential part of the brain. I have seen elephants go straight down with out the back legs going down first, head high fall. They were knocked out but not dead as a finshing shot produced the death kick. I also noted how quickly your first shot went off when you raised your rifle to your shoulder. Only I few of us shoot like that! Congrats! 465H&H

If I had been the original writer of the above, the "OF US" wouldn't have been there. It's a sign of much practice I think, to be able to do it. Way to go Todd! Great video Todd. I was playing it for my daughter (she was amazed) and I paused it after the shot and on the retreat. I believe it was at 5:34 and man, you looked like an NFL running back. You need to get that shot in a still. "If you are not working to protect hunting, then you are working to destroy it". Fred Bear

Great video Todd - thanks for sharing. WRT Shootaway, well, as the old saying goes, when you wrestle with a pig, you both get dirty. The difference is that the pig actually enjoys it. If more of our members would refrain from wrestling with pigs, maybe his nonsense would stop.

DR, I based the "one of us" on watching a lot of elephant hunts on the outdoor shows and a couple of my PH's commenting on how quickly I get a shot off compared to most of their clients. You are right, it is the result of a lot of practice and having developed good follow through technique. Well done Todd! 465H&H
