MY new 416 Ruger
12 May 2008, 23:17
AtkinsonMY new 416 Ruger
Finished it today...
Mauser 1908 action, Lothar Walthar 20 inch barrel, barrel band swivel, barrel band front sight with a NECG gold faced partridge sight; Talley bolt handle, two pos. wing safety, nice peice of Russian Circasian from Dowtin Gun Works (oldworldwalnut.com) Limb saver recoil pad.
Even with the short tube is really cranks them out fast and 2400 FPS is easy with any 400 gr. bullet. The gun digests book max 416 Rem loads with ease and no problems...82 grs. of RL-15 is one of my favorite loads in it and that sets you on your heels if your my age, so I think my all around load will be 79 or 80 grs. of RL-15., but still playing with this one, will let you know how it comes out..
I am working on pictures and have hit on the Ern to post them for me..that be da judge...

Bill/OregonRay: That's outstanding. Can't wait to see the photos. Shows us some loaded rounds, too.

How many down does it hold? I'll trade the .405 Winchester for it.

AtkinsonIt holds 3 down, I figure thats enough for me, now in your case well we won't go there!

Just kidd'en yer honer!
We could do some trading on the .405 if your in a good mood and feel a little remorse for the many times you have taken advantage of my age and memory...I would have to have a wee bit of boot ya know...

Certainly you are not implying that some individuals are perhaps treated differently or that a certain double standard may exist at AR??

That is some good looking wood. Tried to go to Old World's web site but nothing except the first page would come up.

Die Ou JagterRay, I pissed and moaned because I posted here on the Africian board looking for help hand loading some rounds for my up comming AFRICIAN SAFARI and the Lord and Master moved it to the reloading board. Besides it is not an Africian rifle it is
European bastard rifle (made from European based or made parts) and belongs on the Big Bore page, nuff said. Mauser, Lothar Walthar, NECG (Detrick Apel), Russian Circasian Walnut stock hum sounds European to me.

I didn't say it wasn't a nice rifle!

Make a good Griz rifle in central Africa.

Die Ou JagterSlug, I am dealing with it, thus my posts.

Ray, that is just beautiful, a really handsome rifle.
[grovel] Don't 'spose you would have a close up of the round, p'haps with a 375 as a comparison?[/grovel]

Steve
Nice looking rifle Ray. You surely love the .416 calibers.

AtkinsonShinzo,
I don't have a 375 round, but I can take some close up pictures of the .416 and email them to you if you give me your email address or perhaps someone on this board has pictures of these rounds, seems like someone posted them a while back.

GAHUNTERJust curious: Has anyone standardized this cartridge yet? Is it simply a matter of opening up a .375 Ruger to .416? How do you form your brass?

Aspen Hill AdventuresLooks like a girl's gun to me. Twenty inch barrel? Yep, girl's gun, send it my way before you embarrass yourself further.

Ray,
Based on your experience, how hard do you think it would be to do a .416 Ruger on a pre-64 M70 standard length action?
Mike
15 May 2008, 20:41
AtkinsonIt would take a new barrel and only a tad of tinkering to make it feed..If it were a pre 64 action for the 338 it would probably just need a new barrel as I think the .338 box would work as is...at any rate it would be a fairly simple conversion..Dennis Olson could do it in a heartbeat, it did mine on a std Mauser, not a lot of difference there.
On second thought, it won't work with the M-70 action so how much do you want for the action?

Die Ou JagterWhere is the Big Bore board?
Ray- is that a Brockman pop up rear peep sight? I put that on my .416 Atkinson if you will recall and love it. Even Will admitted defeat and installed one on one of his rifles.

With mine it's a single pass of the .375 Ruger case thru the 416 Ruger die. Very easy to do.
In my mauser the case has to be trimmed about .050 to allow depth of seat and also crimp the bullet.
